Messi, Aguero, Caballero In Argentina Squad Vs Italy, Spain; Dybala, Tevez Out

By Adeboye Amosu: Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero top the list of 22 foreign-based stars invited by Nigeria’s Russia 2018 World Cup grpup opponents Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli for next month’s international friendly fixtures against Italy and Spain, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
The two-time world champions will face  Italy at the Etihad Stadium, home of English Premier League leaders Manchester City on March 23rd and then take on Spain four days later at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitan.
Sampaoli also handed invitation to Manchester United and Everton defenders Marcos Rojo and Marcos Funes Mori who last featured for the Albiceleste in March last year due to long-term injuries.
Chelsea second choice goalkeeper Willy Caballero also got the nod for the games following some impressive showings in the Carabao Cup and Emirates FA Cup.
Other regular names in the squad are Paris Saint-Germain forward Angel Di Maria, Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero, Nicolas Otamendi, Javier Mascherano, Lucas Biglia and Ever Banega.
There was however no place in the squad for Paulo Dybala who recently returned from injury for his club Juventus, Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi and Carlos Tevez who rejoined  Boca Juniors.
Messi missed last November’s 4-2 friendly defeat to the Super Eagles in Russia as he was rested by Sampaoli.
Argentina are drawn in Group D with Nigeria, Iceland and Croatia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

A fearsome team on paper & by name, no doubt, but which struggled to qualify from their SA group.
Names don’t play football as demonstrated when Super Eagles forced a bitter pill down the throat of LA Albicelestes in a 4-2 high stakes victory.
Fans globally are divided over the strength of Argentina. But what many still don’t realise is that Messi has passed his prime at 29, and not the same ruthless player when playing for Argentina.
Argentine team is old and tired, and always struggle against young teams.
    This Argentina team are pretenders.
Believe it or not, their Coach Jorge Sampaoli is not such a big crack. His tactics and formations are several times off keys & flat making it difficult to deliver when it mattered most. Diego Maradona said so too.
Against Russia in November, 2017 they struggled to score a late goal.
Argentina are in for a shock early exit from group D.
This Argentina squad is a paper tiger, believe me. Don’t expect much from them.
Super Eagles will again expose them to global ridicule & humiliation.

  • Hey, am the first to state that Messi will retire in shame.
Nigeria and Croatia will qualify from this group.
Nigeria will qualify top of the group.
Let me add even more to my predictions.
Francis Uzoho will become a world class keeper after the m undial.
Alex Iwobi , Oghenekero Etebo, Tyrone Aburi, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho will get better recognition on the transfer market.
    Their stock will greatly appreciate.
    This is our time
Soar the great Super Eagles of Nigeria, the only light in the dark nation called nigeria.

    • While we rejoice for our anticipated staying fire power to emerge from this deadly group, credit must be given to the late Keshi for believing in young players being the core of our national team. This proved to be an impediment for our opponents, especially Cote d’Ivoire, during the 2013 Nations Cup Tournament. It was a spectacle to contrast the huffing and puffing Ivoriens with our boys who remained physically agile till the final whistle. Good that Rohr also believes in this concept … and so by extension, Uzoho is ripe enough to be our No. 1 goalie.

I agree with most of your predictions, but Nigeria and Iceland will qualify from this group.
