Lionel Messi emerged the hero as he grabbed the winning goal in Barcelona’s 2-1 LaLiga win against Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon on Sunday.
Rafinha put Barcelona 1-0 up before Diego Godin equalised for Atletico.
But Messi got the all important goal with less than five minutes left in the encounter.
The win took Barcelona temporarily on top in the league table on 54 points, two points ahead of Real Madrid who will face Villarreal later on Sunday.
Atletico Madrid were asking all the questions in the early part of the game and should have scored under five minutrs but Yannick Carrasco and Diego Godin missed very good chances.
Barcelona were able to weather the early onslaught from Atletico and looked to have opened scoring but Luiz Suarez was judged to have fouled Jan Oblak.
Barcelona continued to gradually drag themselves into the game and almost took the lead but Lionel Messi’s superb free-kick was tipped over the bar by Oblak.
In the second half both teams created chances with Suarez, Antoine Griezmann and Godin going close.
But it was Barcelona that broke the deadlock on 64 minutes through Rafinha who profited from a rebound inside the box.
Atletico drew level in the 70th minute as Godin, who had been one of the best players, headed in from Koke’s free-kick.
With time running out, Barcelona camped in Atletico’s half and eventually got the winner on 87 minutes thanks to Messi who poked the ball past Oblak.
