Messi: ‘Tough And Strong’ Super Eagles Will Be Difficult To Beat

Lionel Messi has admitted that though the current Nigerian team is ‘unknown’ to him and his Argentina side, the Super Eagles normally have a tough and strong character which could make them very difficult to defeat when both teams clash in their final group D game at the 2018 FIFA World Cup game, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Argentina and Nigeria are scheduled to meet for the fifth time at the World Cup in Saint Petersburg on the 26th of June with Nigeria yet to record a win over the La Albiceleste in their last three games at the Mundial in 1994, 2002, 2010 and 2014.

Both teams will also face Iceland and Croatia in group D of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Messi further stressed that favorable results against Iceland and Croatia will be more important than that over the three time African champions who are regarded as underdogs.

“Our challenge is to be champions,” Messi told UK tabliod, Express.co.uk.

“We know it won’t be easy but I’m certain that Argentina has a squad capable of being a champion in Russia. If the players all believe the same then we can be contenders.”

“If Argentina goes out there and play as we know we can then it will be very difficult to beat us.”

“We have experienced World Cups before and we know that every rival will come out to try and beat us and play the game as if it is a final. That always makes it more complicated. But we are used to it.”

“It will be important to start strongly. Iceland did well in their last tournament so the first match will not be comfortable. But these are the ones to win if you don’t want the next matches to be even more complicated.”

“Croatia is a good team with players in the big European leagues and that makes them dangerous.”

“We don’t know so much about Nigeria but the African teams are normally compact, tough and strong. So it will be no walkover.”

He also played down talks of him retiring from international football after the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

“I don’t want to speak about my future.”

“For now I’m only concerned about the present and doing the best I can in this World Cup.”

Messi, l like you, you are a humble man. Watch out ! This team many underrate , this dark horse, this underdog will surprise them all and the Super Eagles willturn out to be a “top dog” going into the second round.

Once again, my final scoreline :

    Croatia 1 – Nigeria 2

    Iceland 0 – Nigeria 2

    Argentina 1 – Nigeria 1

  • there is a day i dreamt that the super eagles won croatia by 2:0. lets hope it becomes reality.

    Emma good prediction

  • amen in jesus name i belief

  • Be realistic with your expectations please to avoid landing in the hospital.
This team is just average but if they play collectively as a unit without seeking individual glory, then they might spring few surprises but in all honesty,we are not there yet.

  • Exactly what I had in mind.only that the game against Croatia will have less than 2goals
Bcos both teams will be very careful not to concede a goal first.

    Correct score Croatia 0
    Nig. 1

History has shown the world that when you praise the Super Eagles, they flop; But when you inderrate them, they perform ! On the field, names don’t play football. You (people) may think this Eagles team is average, but the team is full of very young fearless warriors who are out to make names. If this “dark horse” gels, Croatia cannot stop them – this first game will not end in a draw, Nigeria will carry the day.

I can see history repeating itself, because in 1994, the Super Eagles squad to the World Cup was relatively unknown as most of the players were in not very big clubs compared to their group opponents. Stoichkov, for instance, was the talk of the town and Bulgaria and the other teams were at the top of their games. But our boys, though unknown, were unknown supermen and superstars ready to explode .

And that time bomb, with Rashidi Yekini as the arrow head, actually exploded in their first match and destroyed Bulgaria 0 – 3…..That was a team that lost most of their friendly matches just like this present squad – Generally, teams mostly fear Eagles due to their unpredictability and their refined “gra gra” style of play.

Croatia believes defeating Nigeria is as good as going with Argentina to the next round . Though, the two teams are going to play with caution, but because of the fear of Argentina, both teams will eventually come out attacking, smoking and throwing everything into the game to ensure victory and that is when you will see the goals …
