Following midweek actions in the Champions League which threw up qualifying teams for the second round, only three Nigerian players remain to fly the country’s flag in the prestigious European clubs competition.
Mikel Obi of Chelsea, Chinedu Obasi of Schalke 04 and Elderson Echiejile of Monaco were the trio of Nigerian internationals that scaled the group stages hurdles with their respective clubsides. Only Mikel have however, won the Champions League following the English clubside’s triumph in 2008 which was the first time Chelsea have won the money-spinning competition.
And if the pedigree and current strength of the three teams – Chelsea, Schalke 04 and Monaco – are anything to go by, one can safely bet that Mikel stand the best chance of winning this season’s edition while Obasi and Echiejile hardly stand a chance.
Meanwhile, recuperating Michael Olaitan’s Olympiakos Piraeus and Ahmed Musa’s CSKA Moscow were eleminated in the group stages and will be dropping to play in the Europa League.
