From Mumini Alao in Brasilia:
Super Eagles influential midfielder John Mikel Obi was left to rue what might have been if the team’s disallowed goal scored by Emmanuel Emenike was not ruled out.
Nigeria lost 2-0 against France to exit the 2014 World Cup but did so with the respect of the watching world who commended the athleticsm and qualities of the players.
“I said before the game that it would be decided by little details and that was what happened, Mikel noted. “Our goal was legitimate but the referee ruled it was offside. That was a key moment that went against us. If the goal had stood, the outcome would probably have been different.
“Then, the two goals we conceded were disappointing because they came from set-pieces; corner kicks. We spoke a lot about that among ourselves that we needed to be fully concentrated at set-pieces. But it happened that we conceded both goals from corner kicks.
“Overall, I think we have had a good tournament. This is a young team and I believe we can achieve a lot more in the future. I hope Nigerians will not be too disappointed.”
