Mikel Opts Out Of Super Eagles – Seychelles Clash

Mikel Opts Out Of Super Eagles – Seychelles Clash

Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, has opted out of the team’s 2018 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles next month in Victoria.

Mikel only returned to action for his Chinese club, Tiajin Teda last week after missing six league games due to injury.

“We spoke together. He is just coming back from injury and he needs to push his club commitments to get back in shape,” Super Eagles head coach,” Gernot Rohr told KweseESPN.com

“After injury he needs time to get fit again.”

Rohr is expected to name his squad for the crucial clash against Seychelles billed for Victoria on September 7 on Friday.

Mikel’s absence will be another blow to the team’s quest of qualifying for Cameroon 2019 AFCON following the decision of another key member of the team, Victor Moses to retire from international football.

The Super Eagles lost their first game in the qualifiers at home 2-0 to South Africa and need to beat Seychelles to keep their hopes of making a return to Africa’s showpiece event alive after failing to qualify for the last two editions.

Even if he does start or comes in as a sub, he still has a role to play…

Good luck to you Mikel. You have done well and you needs time to recovered fully from your injury. Apart from Mikel issue, the team spirit has been down after the world cup. Hopefully, the coach would lift the spirit of the team again. Best of luck Mr. Rohr. God bless Nigeria!!!

I understand BFF is taking the match to Kaduna, are they progressing as a country of what? Pitch is terrible.

  • Actually they have not decided yet, and the kaduna pitch is not bad,it was recently renovated with perfect grass.d only problem is the capacity.

  • Rohr try and invite Nwakili brothers, umah Sadiq, Ikouwem Udo, former arsernal winger Chuba Akpom and Joshua Maja to the super eagles

  • We don’t need any soothsayer or crystal ball to know that Mikel’s Super Eagles career is gradually coming to a close with club and family commitments and issue of distance of club -China, not excluding injury concerns too.
These are indications that he has little time to spend with the nat team. We shouldn’t expect him to officially inform the NFF and Rohr but from all these indications we should be able to draw conclusions Mikel prefer to be sparingly used for nat team engagements.
His unavailability in all Eagles matches is not in
doubt having been with the Eagles as far back as 2006, at the age of 18, a career that has spanned over 12years of illustrious career with so many achievements, notably the AfCON 2013 title, Rio 2016 Olympic.

Given this awareness, the Eagles gaffer and the technical team are expected to start prospecting for his replacement without delay.
The likes of Iwobi, Nwakali brothers, Etebo and perhaps Ejaria Ovie,if NFF can secure his international clearance of eligibility for Nigeria, are among candidates to fill in for him in his  absence.
Of these options, little inexperienced Kelechi Nwakali is close to the Eagles skipper in terms of style, touches and finesse on the ball and body frame. At 18 and a decent height of 6ft, he oozes class and very adventurous. The 2015 under 17 world cup winning captain of the Golden Eaglets boasts of impressive goal scoring ability with brilliant dead ball skills. He draws comparison with Mikel in exquisite ball distribution and providing visionary defence splitting passes. His class performance for Eagles team B against Athletico
Madrid leaves many football fans demanding for his immediate inclusion into the World cup bound Super Eagles team. His holding midfield display and his seering elegant movement on the ball caught the admiration of all and sundry.
Although many might argue that he’s young and inexperienced with little club experience, but in truth if you’re good enough you’re old enough, as they say.
Mind you some players perform well with the national side regardless of their club experience and achievements.

Iwobi is one many have tipped to take over from Mikel in the attacking midfield role.
Alex, the Arsenal prodigy is in the class of him own with incredible and amazing skill set to break lose from his makers. With improved goal scoring ability in the final third he should eclipse Mikel to become a complete midfielder.
