MLS Side, Chicago Fires Signs Nigerian Striker

The Chicago Fire believe they’ve found one answer to their scoring problems with the acquisition of Swedish/Nigerian striker Kennedy Igboananike.

The team announced a multi-year Designated Player deal Tuesday with Igboananik. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Igboananike,a 25-year-old forward, scored 22 goals in 63 appearances for AIK Stockholm over the last two seasons.

“Kennedy is a dynamic goal scorer with a track record of producing,” Fire head coach Frank Yallop said in a statement.

“He’s young and exciting, a player with incredible pace, and we look forward to adding him to our roster to bolster our attack.”

A native of Nigeria, he’s been described by other soccer observers as arguably one of the world’s fastest players.

That kind of production offers an immediate lift to a Fire team that managed just 41 goals last year — only four teams had fewer — on the way to a 6-10-18 finish and missed the MLS playoffs for the second straight season.

Two Premier League clubs — Southampton and Queens Park — also reportedly were interested in Igboananike, according to reports last month. He nearly joined Southampton last year before red tape torpedoed the deal. There also were reports of interest from a Spanish club.
