Moses: I’ve Had A Great Year, Even With CAF Award Snub

Nigeria winger Victor Moses says he is not disappointed to be left out of the final three-man shortlist for the 2017 African Footballer of the Year award.

Moses had a memorable 2016/2017 season with Chelsea, winning the Premier League title for the first time and becoming a regular member of the team under Antonio Conte.

He also helped Nigeria become the first African country to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in a group that had two of the continent’s powerhouses Cameroon and Algeria.

After initially making the 10-man shortlist for the award, he was shockingly left out of the final three-man list by the Confederation of African Football.

Gabon’s Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang, Egypt’s Mohammed Salah and Senegal forward Saido Mane are the three men who are in the running for this year’s award.

The former Wigan player stated he is content with his initial nomination despite outrage of football fans in Nigeria due to his snub.

“I must have done well. It felt good to be nominated. I’ve worked so hard. It’s a bit crazy and shows how far I’ve come,” Moses was quoted in the Daily Star on Sunday.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner recently returned to action for Chelsea after missing out for six weeks as a result of the injury he picked up in a league match against his former club Crystal Palace.

Despite the little setback, he claimed he has enjoyed his time at the club this year.

“It’s been a great year for me. I’ve really enjoyed it, but want to keep it going.”

  • Mohammad salah is the best african footballer at the moment no one can surpass him.jealous down,am zambian and not Egyptian, lets give credit where its due.2018 may not be moses year considering that he spends most of his time on the bench at chelsea while salah scores on average 2 goals per game

    • Cde Elliot Goledema The moment you said you are Zambian, I understand where you are coming from.

    • Who do you want to be africas best if i may ask??

    • phillip 4 years ago

Mr Goledema, the award is based on their performance last season and not this current season. If the best footballer of the year award was given to Ronaldo while Messi has performed this season than Ronaldo then you should know the parameters used for the award. The same goes for CAF award. Last season who was Salah? The final list should have been Mane, Moses and Aubameyang. However in terms of their input towards any achievement because it has to do with the final result (achievement) both mane and Aubameyang didn’t achieve where as Moses got the EPL with his efforts. Next award after this should be where the name of Salah appears and definitely not this one. Your performance should go along with the achievement of the team you played for. I hope between the remaining three Salah won’t be the selected one because he wasn’t a household name last season unlike this season. CAF should come out and state the parameters or prerequisite.

    • This last year not current form, moses deserve the award for 2016/2017 season

    • Unfortunately,its salah winning it.lol

  • Really, what’s the worth of being Africa’s best…. It’s of no importance if you ask me

  • Moses spends most of his time on bench at Chelsea?… When soccer analysts like Paul scoles, Neville and others see moses as important as kante and hazard in Chelsea’s team? U are truly fro Zambia. Second base jare.

What the Zambia guy said is the reason after Ikpeba no Nigerian won it,Okocha the greatest never won it.Yakubu was highest scorer in Premier league several times but never nominated.today Auba is top scorer in the german league and won it ,the same excuse he still nominated? wake up Nigeria lets unite the world hate us.

Victor moses deserved this award. At least he should have made the final list. The time spent on the bench this season was basically due to injury. What parameters! are CAF using? This present season that is yet unfinished!? or last season where moses did extremely well? or are they combining the two seasons? The three players listed by CAF are good players no doubt about that. But this is not their time for the award. It’s next year!. Its even still possible for victor moses to put up a better and excellent performance than any of this three between now and next year. CAF should come out with an ”open” parameter so that we can know what exactly is being used for the award.

CAF FOTY my foot! Whether Moses deserves d award or not, I don’t care abt d award. FOR ME, I stopped believing, trusting or following its trend since Jay Jay Okocha was dubiously robbed of it in 2004! So?

  • @Goledema whoever CAF deem fit they should give the award, for all i care, sentiment aside, do you know the parameters they CAF claim to be using prior to this time? If you know, why are you behaving like a novice?

  • Please remove emotions from facts, m. Salah deserves it
