Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has attributed Bristol City’s shock 2-1 win against his side in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup to luck.
On Wednesday night, Championship club Bristol City stunned holders United following a late Korey Smith goal which sent the home team into the semi-finals.
Joe Bryan had given Bristol City the lead on 51 minute before Zlatan Ibrahimovic restored parity for United on 58 minutes.
United became the fourth Premier League side after Stoke City, Crystal Palace and Watford to be eliminated by Bristol City in this season’s League Cup.
“They were a bit lucky but they fought a lot to be lucky,” the Portuguese manager said in his post-match interview. “Everyone was waiting for our goal so they were lucky. We hit the post twice.
“But they played brilliantly, they fought like it was the game of their lives which probably it was. A beautiful day for football. A team from the lower division won. A big day for them.
“In the first half we lacked the intensity that they had. Physically and mentally. It was one more day in the office for my players, a day that some of them didn’t even want to come to the office.”
