Musa, Iwobi Benched As Ndidi Can’t Stop Arsenal; Anichebe Loses With Sunderland

By Johnny Edward:

Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi made his 12th English Prmier League appearance for Leicester City who lost 1-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Nacho Monreal’s deflected shot earned Arsenal the maximum points from the game ahead of Sunday’s London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

The win also sees Arsenal move up to sixth in the EPL table with 60 points from 32 games, four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City who host rivals Manchester United on Thursday.

Both teams started the encounter slowly but Leicester City carved out the first chance of the game through Jamie Vardy whose left-footed shot from the centre of the box failed to trouble Kasper Schmeichel.

In the 22nd minute, Riyad Mahrez’s half volley was tipped over by Petr Cech who was relatively troubled in the first half.

With little or no attempt on goal from both sides the first half ended goalless.

In the second half, the Gunners who began the game with their new 3-4-3 formation switched to 4-4-2 replacing Kieran Gibbs with Danny Welbeck in the 68th minute.

Ndidi had an attempt via a Christian Fuchs corner but his header from the edge of the box was saved by Cech.

The 21-year-old Nigerian was also on alert to thwart Mesut Ozil’s cut back pass in the 84th minute of the game before Monreal’s goal.

Alex Iwobi who has made 24 EPL appearances with three goals for Arsenal was an unusued substitute in the draw. The Nigerian winger has failed to feature in Arsenal’s last four games.

For Leicester City Ahmed Musa was an unused substitute in the encounter. The Nigerian winger has made 20 EPL appearances for the Foxes this season.

At the Riverside, Victor Anichebe played 90 minutes for Sunderland who suffered their 22nd defeat of the season as they lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough.
Marten de Roon scored the only goal for Middlesbrough who recorded their first win in 2017.

De Roon fired in Adam Clayton through ball into the edge of the box for his fourth league goal of the season.
