The first round of the US Open tournament has pitted two friends against each other, as Rafael Nadal and compatriot David Ferrer will play the most attractive first round matchup starting on Monday, August 27 in New York.
Teammates in a ton of matches, chief among them the Davis Cup, Nadal spoke about his affinity for Ferrer and the challenge that playing him will present.
“We have great memories together, especially in the Davis Cup,” Marca quotes Nadal as saying.
“David is a good friend and has been an incredible player for a long time.
“He is still at a great level in tennis.”
Nadal, the world No.1, is the favourite to defend his crown while Ferrer comes in with doubts after some of his latest results on the professional circuit.
It will be the thirty-first confrontation between the two, with Nadal dominating the proceedings 24 to six.
The tennis player from Javea has fallen this week to position 148 in the rankings after having lost in the semifinals of the Masters 1,000 of Cincinnati.
Meanwhile, Nadal will avoid Novak Djokovic until the final.
The Serbian, who comes off a championship win in Cincinnati, has fallen to the bottom of the bracket along with Roger Federer, against whom he could play in the penultimate round.
Djokovic will make his debut against the Hungarian, Marton Fucsovics, while Federer will start with Yoshihito Nishioka.
Nadal’s path is blocked by the Russian Karen Khachanov, Kyle Edmund and Kevin Anderson.
In the semifinals, Juan Martin Del Potro could be there to meet Nadal, another player who he played in the 2017 edition.
