The Nigeria Basketball Federation has called on Nigerians to drum up support for the senior men’s national basketball team as they get set to take on the Burkina Faso national team for a possible slot at this year’s African Basketball Championship holding in Tunisia.
The team is still in Abuja hoping to jet out of the country as soon as FIBA Africa gives the nod for the tie which is likely to suffer a postponment due to logistics reason coming from the camp of the Burkinabes.
The Burkina Faso Basketball Association has demanded that the home and away games should be played in their country and this, the Nigeria Basketball Federation strongly objected to.
According to the media officer of the Nigerian male national basketball team, Akinkunle Bolarinwa, the Nigeria Basketball Federation received response from FIBA Africa yesterday stating that the matter will be sorted out later today (Sunday, February 22).
The first leg of the encounter was fixed for this weekend by FIBA Africa but the Burkina Faso Basketball Association has kept the NBBF in the dark regarding the details of the match.
Assistant coach of the team, Ayiinla Johnson says the home based players will give solid account of themselves in the qualifier and book a ticket to the main championship in Tunisia.
“The home-based players are committed to the cause of the team and are ready for the task ahead,” Johnson assured.
Meanwhile the NBBF also wished the vice captain of the team, Stanley Gumut a happy birthday and hopes his indelible experience with the national team will spur the team to victory against Burkina Faso.
