Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi made his tenth appearance in the English Premier League this season for Leicester City in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Sunderland who handed Victor Anichebe a cameo appearance after a long injury lay-off, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Two second-half goals from Islam Slimani and Jamie Vardy sealed a sixth win on the bounce for the Foxes in all competitions under manager Craig Shakespeare while the defeat was the 20th of the season for Sunderland manager David Moyes.
Ndidi was on for 82 minutes before he was replaced by Andy Gray while another Nigerian Ahmed Musa was not listed for the game. Leicester had the first chance in the third minute when Shinji Okazaki failed to tap in Demarai Gray’s low cross into the middle.
Gray also had a chance in the 27th minute but fired his effort high and wide of the target as the half ended goalless. At the restart, Kasper Schmeichel made a rare save to keep the score goalless when he stopped Seb Larsson’s a low strike towards goal from around 25 yards. Four minutes later the Danish goalkeeper was called into action again this time from Jemaine Defoe.
In the 69th minute the Foxes got the breakthrough. Slimani held off a challenge from Lamine Kone to glide his header past Jordan Pickford in goal for Sunderland.
Nigerian striker Anichebe came on for Lee Catermole in the 73rd minute and was denied by the upright in the 79th minute of the encounter. Leicester are now 10th in the EPL table with 36 points from 30 games while Sunderland languish in bottom place in the log.
At Vicarage Road, Isaac Success came on for Mbaye Niang in the 80th minute for Watford who defeated West Brom 2-0. A goal in each half from Niang and Troy Deeney sealed a 10th win for the Hornets who moved to ninth place in the EPL table. It was the first time West Brom will be losing to Watford at Vicarage Road since 1994.
The game was Success’ 15th substitute appearance of the season for Watford this term. He has scored once for Watford. The win took Watford up to ninth in the table with 37 points from 30 games while West Brom maintain their eighth place despite the defeat.
