Newcastle’s Premier League season finally gets underway today, when reigning champions Manchester City visit St James’ Park for the kick off.
The two sides met on the opening fixture of last season at the Etihad and the home side ran out 4-0 winners, a result Magpies boss Alan Pardew will be hoping to avoid a repeat of today.
Pardew will be hoping his new signings can make an instant impact, with up to seven new faces preparing for their Newcastle debuts.
Daryl Janmaat, Jack Colback, Facundo Ferreyra, Ayoze Perez, Emmanuel Riviere and Remy Cabella are all hoping for starts but former Ajax man Siem de Jong is expected to miss out through injury.
Cheick Tiote, Davide Santon and Papiss Cisse will join the Dutchman on the sidelines while Ryan Taylor is unlikely to make the squad as he regains match fitness following a two-year injury layoff.
Hatem Ben Arfa’s exile from the first-team is set to continue, while Jonas Gutierrez will not be involved after seemingly suffering the same fate as the Frenchman.
As for the champions, manager Manuel Pellegrini has been relatively quiet in the transfer market this summer but has recently captured £30m centre-back Eliaquim Mangala from FC Porto. The Frenchman won’t be involved tomorrow though, while Vincent Kompany’s participation is yet to be confirmed after the City captain sat out his side’s 0-3 defeat in the Community Shield last weekend.
