By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:
The Nigeria Football Federation are presently divided on the choice of candidate for appointment as Super Falcons coach, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Feelers from the Glass House Secretariat of the Nigeria Football Federation revealed that the Technical Committee recommended that the former coach who was sacked on his return from the 2015 women world cup in Canada, Edwin Okon, was preferred to Florence Omagbemi who won the AWCON as coach late last year.
The Technical Committee’s reason for wanting Omagbemi replaced was because of her passive role when the players staged protest and refused to vacate their hotel until their allowances and bonuses were fully paid following AWCON victory. The Committee believed she connived with her backroom staff and players to force government to pay.
This position was supported by a large number of the Executive Committee members who backed the recall of Okon as chief coach of Super Falcons. This did not go down well with the federation president, Amaju Pinnick, and a few top shots who wanted Omagbemi to continue, and the appointment was put on hold.
“Recommendations have been made for the coaches of Super Falcons and other choice women teams but the board of the NFF has yet to approve of them because of interests. We want the best for the country and we have selected the best, it I’d now left for the NFF board to approve,” a top executive committee member divulged to Completesportsnigeria.com.
“We want to see how they will impose people who embarrassed the NFF and Nigeria with their protest and indiscipline on us. If we cannot afford a foreign coach for the Super Falcons, Okon is the best option at home. His record speaks for him as coach of Rivers Angels ”
He added: “why is it that they did not fault our recommendations on other women teams except Super Falcons? It is because the federation boss and committee are not on same page on Okon and Omagbemi,” our source who is a respected board member reiterated.Meanwhile, former Super Falcons coach, Christopher Danjuma, has been appointed coach of the national Under-20 women team, the Falconets.
COMMENTS
Omagbemi is recently nominated for FIFA BEST WOMEN COACH OF THE YEAR…Why don’t they retain her?..
She lost her son few weeks ago.. So she can’t work cause she’s not in a good mood to handle the super falcons
Then…the assistant coach should be there in a temporary basis…and when Omagbemi get over the painful mourning….She should take over..
Edwin okon should handle the team
You are abandoning a fifa appreciated coach?
What a country
