The ARK football competition will kick off on Wednesday 14th March at the Recreational and Vocational Training Centre mini-stadium, Ojodu-Berger, Lagos and end on 29 March, according to the organizers of the competition.
Thirty-two teams will compete for a giant trophy and prize money which the sponsor, Adedamola Richard Kasunmu, Chairman, House Committee on Youth, Sports and Social Development at the Lagos State House of Assembly, said would be revealed at the final.
Akinwunmi applauded Kasunmu for his gesture in promoting grassroots football in Lagos.
“I’m proud to be here today and we must not shy away from supporting grassroots football tournament in the State,” Akinwunmi said at the announcement of the tournament.
“This programme has all the backing needed from the ex-internationals, the Lagos State Football Association, the Nigerian Football Federation and this shows that grassroots football is developing.
“To this end all the balls and nets to be used at the tournament, I will provide them.
Kasumu outlined his vision for the tournament.
“The ARK Cup, which is an acronym from my names, is going to be an annual event. It is my hope that through this competition, some future players in the mould of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, AustinOkocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Dosu Joseph, and many more would be discovered from Lagos State.
“I want to call on corporate organisations and well-to-do individuals in Nigeria to kindly develop more interest in promoting and sponsoring our local football teams instead of investing in the English Premier League and La Liga clubs.
“This will not only raise the standard of the game in our local leagues, it will go a long way in boosting our local economy and empowering our youths.”
