Nigeria Face FIFA Ban As Pinnick, Giwa Case Is Adjourned

By Nurudeen Obalola:
Nigeria is at the risk of a FIFA ban after a Jos court failed to deliver judgement on the case between Nigeria Football Federation President Amaju Pinnick and his challenger Chris Giwa.
The four year-old case was expected to be resolved at the Federal High Court in Jos, Plateau State on Tuesday but it was adjourned to 25 September.
Pinnick has been the NFF President since 2014 but a Supreme Court ruling two weeks ago appeared to give Giwa the mandate, and he has since presumably assumed office.

Tuesday was fixed to hear a new motion filed by Pinnick, challenging the ex parte order the court granted Giwa.

Pinnick approached the court for the relief after the Supreme Court judgment which ordered him to comply with the lower court’s order that compelled him to vacate the office for Giwa.

Giwa is not recognised by FIFA as he is serving a ban. He also lost the case with Pinnick at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which is the highest adjudicator in sporting matters.

Justice Musa Kurya, the Presiding judge in the case between Yahaya Adama and Aminu Maigari, had, on June 5, given an ex parte order asking Pinnick’s NFF leadership to vacate the Glass House for the Giwa-led executive.

But Pinnick, through his counsel, Festus Keyamo (SAN), approached the court with two motions demanding the vacation of the order granted Giwa and others, pending the determination of an application challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the case.

Instead of finally resolving the case, drama ensued on Tuesday as both sets of lawyers failed to agree on certain processes and Justice Musa Kurye adjourned to 25 September as the court is on vacation.
Amaju’s lawyer Festus Keyamo however advised the court not to take such a long date as FIFA is waiting for the outcome of the suit to take a decision on Nigeria.
He proceeded further to say that an imminent ban looms for Nigerian football if the right steps are not taken by the parties involved.
Counsel to the parties have admitted that FIFA had written them on the consequences of the current situation and Keyamo showed the court a copy of a letter from FIFA.
The grave implication of the adjournment and failure to resolve the case is that Giwa will continue to claim leadership of the NFF in defiance of his lack of recognition by FIFA and the global body could ban the country.
However, the NFF have to report their domestic situation to FIFA for the global governing body to take drastic action. The only NFF recognised by FIFA is the one headed by Pinnick, who is also the Vice-president of the Confederation of African Football.
It is understood that Pinnick and any Nigerians on FIFA and CAF committees will not be prevented from carrying out their international duties.
However, if a ban is placed on Nigeria, the Super Eagles would not be able to play their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles in September, while the Super Falcons, Falconets, other national teams and Enyimba, who are in the CAF Confederation Cup, would also be affected.

That judge should have shown liniecy.Despite perusing the letter from Fifa he adamantly went ahead not minding the consequences to adjourn the case. That’s malicious!
The fate of millions of football lovers and players were at the mercy of that ruthless judge who is eager to keep one man in power against millions of people. That’s the state of the nation where matters concerning the citizens are least important and that’s the reason we are never moving forward as a nation.
The president is there and this national disgrace is about to happen and he just kept mute I can’t understand this kind of human beings.
I wonder where this type of people come from.
Giwa is such a self centred man who is not even bothered about the ordinary football fans. When people who are in the diaspora see this kind of things happening you just wonder if this people are human.
This is why a lot of people have decided against coming back or identifying themselves as Nigerians when you see people behave like they don’t have conscince.
    Evil barbaric leaders !

Let FIFA ban us. I think it’s better that way. What do you expect when you have a joke, a big time oaf parading himself as the sports minister??? The main problem with the development of our football and sports in general over the last four years is Dalung. It’s just unfortunate that the only thing that unite us as Nigerians will be taken away from us.

That is the fact. We have a clueless sports minister who is biased and sentimental. How can we have Giwa who claims to love football take the NFF to when the knows the end result? This shows clearly that Giwa hates the game and he is going for his own interest.

CAS ruling is the highest so Giwa should stop the drama and stop toying with our football as if it’s their usual political corrupt dance of shame. The sport minister is behind this a man who doesn’t know anything about football not until he was appoint from the fulani government

  • Our only unifying factor is being threatened by the unscrupulous elements in Giwa and his cohorts. Can’t they see the handwriting on the wall that football fans do not want them in Glass House. Spell will befall them if FIFA slam Nigeria with ban

We have a clueless sports minister in Nigeria who is biased and sentimental. It is clear for all to see that Giwa does not like our footbal, because if he does, he would have known the consequences of approaching non football court for football matter. But my worry is this, must everything go to the north?

In civilized compassionate societies someone steps forth to serve and improve the lot of his people. In Nigeria, so-called leaders impose themselves on people for material gains. If it were not the case, would Giwa have the effrontery to approach a non-footballing law agency to declare him fit for an office? Is he going in to serve or to grab from the till? Is his personal interest (power and money) greater than the joy that 200M Nigerians derive from soccer, the ONLY unifying factor in the country? And if we have functional leaders (not nominal leaders) left in the country, won’t they call Giwa to order? What is the minister of sports doing? Doesn’t he know the grave implications that Giwa’s candidacy bring to the country? FIFA and CAF are waiting to drop their heavy hammers. Nigeria!!!

that is just just so bad , if the sports minister is someone who has the people in mind he will just dismiss this IDIOT called GIWA because i don’t see why somebody who says he wants to build beautiful and solid house for his loved children to stay and choose to build it without solid foundation , if Giwa and dalund say they love our sports in then they should let go , giwa should wait for the next election and contest again to see if he can win the next one because if he keeps pressing then it clearly shows he has no love for our country and the sports (football)
this is what you get when you appoint non-professionals to run offices they have no ideas about .

FIFA is actually wasting time. They should wield their sledge hammer and strike us the ban. I am hungrily waiting.
