Nigeria, Iceland Drop In FIFA Rankings As Croatia Rise; Argentina Stable

By James Agberebi:
The Super Eagles of Nigeria dropped one place from 50th to 51st position in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings released on Thursday on FIFA’s official website.

Following their drop in the rankings, the Eagles are now number nine in Africa.

The Nigerian Eagles’ Group D 2018 FIFA World Cup opponents Argentina, Croatia and Iceland also did not move too much in the rankings.

Africa’s other representatives at next year’s World Cup Senegal, Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco are 23rd, 27th, 31st and 40th respectively.

Argentina maintained their number four spot, Croatia moved up one spot to 17th while Iceland dropped to number 22.

Seychelles who will be hosting the Eagles on matchday two in Group E of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in October next year, were down three places to 192.

Group E leaders Libya did not do better as they dropped to 88 and South Africa remained 81st.

World champions Germany remain number one and are followed by Brazil. European champions Portugal are number three and Argentina are number four.

In number five are Belgium, Spain are sixth, Poland are seventh, Switzerland are eighth, France ninth and Chile 10th.

  • Even with the recent performance.

  • We will stage a massive protest to FIFA for degration

  • By the time Nigeria super eagle will win the 2018 world cup, then the FIFA will know that their ranking to us means NOTHING.

  • FIFA RANKINGS CANNOT BE USED TO DETERMINE THE ACTUAL FORM OF A NATIONAL TEAM

  • Who is minding them?

  • Dey should put us 50 in africa stupid

  • This ranking is nonsense ooo. How can Nigeria be rated 9th position in Africa with its recent form??

Blame the NFF for this. If not for the algeria match that featured shehu abdulahi illegally which lead to 3 Points deduction, we would have risen in our ranks. Now we can’t claim to be unbeaten in our world cup qualifiers and that’s why we are 9th in Africa. Those responsible for this slump must be punished.

    • Bros only 1 point was deducted not 3 points and we are STILL UNBEATEN in our world cup qualifiers.

      • VICTOR 6 months ago

Nope, we are no longer unbeaten cos the match was awarded 3-0 in favour of algeria meaning we lost that match as to the previous 1-1 draw we played originally. This is why we dropped further in the rankings. You can confirm this via the fifa website.

        • even when the match was counted before and that of Argentina we dropped 9 places down from 41 to 50. abnormal ranking

  • FIFA, this one na una business.

  • FIFA,this one na una business.this won’t affect sh** anymore.useless rankings!

Fifa ranking is not an updated method of measuring a national team straight. However, it is an opportunity for the real SUPPER EAGLE to see it and announce to FIFA,by challenging most if not all highly FIFA ranked national team to clench a medal or trophy.

  • currently, Nigeria is the best in Africa. Nobody can take away that believe from me. Period

  • In February 2007, Nigeria lost to Ghana in friendly match, FIFA ranking demoted Nigeria from 9th to 36th in the world but Argentina lost to Nigeria in 2017 yet they remain in their 4th position while Nigeria slipped

  • Guys you can’t expect Nigeria to be rank ahead of the african countries that have qualified for the worldcup, senegal, tunisia, egypt and morocco. These Countries participated at the 2015 and 2017 afcons while Nigeria did not qualify at all for both tournaments

  • Chile have not qualified for worldcup 2018 but they are rank 10th in the world, is because of their last 3-4 years performances. in our case Nigeria have done badly in the last 3 years and we have not even qualified for the last two afcons

  • FIFA don’t know what they are ranking.

  • Please lets not look on only the super eagles performers….but come to think of it, how is Nigeria professional league organised(stadium,NFF and other statistics) our league is too poor compered to other Africa countries….atenyi Antenyi Samson nd Josh Uzoh their know what their are doing….

Let me comment differently. FIFA’S rankings and this latest ranking has only succeeded in making the Super Eagles to become ruggedly stronger and tactically better.
Nigeria Super Eagles is poor in FIFA world rankings yet we qualified above others in the group with a resounding qualification.
Super Eagles is low in FIFA world rankings yet we demolished Algeria the so called better team in Africa, and qualified ahead of them.
Nigeria Super Eagles are insignificantly poor in FIFA world rankings yet we massacred and pummeled the number four(4) Argentina.
Nigeria Super Eagles is poor in FIFA world rankings yet, in their very nose we will tear all opponents apart and go to the semi final…and the big one.
If you all look at history and biblical chronicles, you will see that, men and women of legendary exploits, are those who were never recognized and given a chance.
Let them continue to rank us lower. The lower they go, the better our performance.

  • Forget about this ranking is just analysis it work it can not work but presently is wrong
