–For the Africa 7s Championship
The Black Stallions 7s team, under the captaincy of Cowries flyhalf Azeez Ladipo, will fly to Harare this week to take on the best in Africa in the Africa 7s Championship.
Ladipo and his team have been put through a strenuous camp for the past week by former Blitzbok and Cheetahs wing Fabian Juries. Juries in his heyday was an excdepional runner and brilliant finisher.
Juries is in Lagos courtesy of the NRFF who appreciate the need to have an expert guide the team in what will surely be Nigeria’s biggest rugby challenge so far. The team made up entirely of home based players is a mix of youth and experience. Ladipo is a good distributor of the ball and outside him he will have the likes of Abdulmalik Salihu the police gas-man who has speed to burn and this season’s sensation in the South West League Christian Ogar.
The young flyer, who learned his rugby in Jos, has proved beyond doubt that he’s more than just the dreadlocked poster boy of rugby with 19 tries in the league. Nigeria will do well if they can get him into space. But if ever there was a man who could make space out of nothing it’s Juries.
His ability to change direction and accelerate through gaps was the stuff of legend. If he can impart and inject some of that skill into the Black Stallions the Nigerians could cause a few surprises.
The tournament will be held at the Harare Sports Club and is set to involve 12 countries, Kenya Uganda, Tunisia, Nigeria, Madagascar, Namibia, Botswana,Senegal, Zambia, Ivory Coast, South Africa and the hosts Zimbabwe.
