In a very refreshing twist, top Nigerian prospect, Jerome Philip, is set for a breakthrough in the professional game in America as he has been snapped up by New York Red Bulls (NYRB), Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Philip, whose football skills were horned at the popular Gee Lec Football Academy, Jos, was the top pick at a scouting tournament organised by Krakovia Sports Limited in Kaduna last July, from where US based soccer agent Damani Ralph proposed him to NYRB.
The lanky striker was already in line to be invited to the U-20 national team preparatory to the Africa U-20 Nations Cup qualifying series, before the opportunity to take his career international beckoned.
“I am happy that I’m getting a chance to start a professional career abroad and I want to assure New York Red Bulls that they will not be disappointed,” an elated Philip told Completesportsnigeria.com.
“The MLS will provide me with the platform to showcase my talent to the world.”
The 18 year-old is expected to start with the NYRB II, the club’s reserve team, who campaign in the United Soccer League USL, the second tier of the professional game in the United States.
Cross Rivers state born Philip, who has trained with Nigerian professional side, Yobe Desert Stars, ditched offers from Norway and the Czech Republic for America.
