If any of the top six teams were going to catch Manchester City this season they needed Man U to beat them last Sunday. The Red Devils were unable to do that and by beating their arch-rivals City set a new EPL record. It was their 14th victory in a row in the Premier League which has never been achieved before in a single season. Arsenal did manage to win 14 games in a row back in 2002 but that was achieved over two seasons. At the rate that the Blues are going, it looks likely that the bookies will pay out on them winning the league before the turn of the new year.
It was the 175th time that the two Manchester clubs have faced each other and it used to be United that was the dominant force. Times have changed though since the era of Sir Alex Ferguson’s and Man U fans are still waiting for their first title victory since his retirement. They could be waiting a very long time if Pep Guardiola decides to stay on for the long term as at present they look unbeatable. Once again Guardiola has got one over his most fierce rival Mourinho and with an 11 point gap now between the two sides, it is going to take something extraordinary for Man U to catch their neighbors.
David Silva was at his best yet again and it was the Spanish maestro that managed to score the opening goal. United managed to draw level through Marcus Rashford who is having his best season for Man U this season. City was dominant though and managed to get the breakthrough they needed through an Otamendi volleyed goal in the second half.
It was a game that both teams were trying to break records with Man U looking to break a 40 game unbeaten home record. They were level with it before the match kicked off but the result saw them fall one game short. Instead, it was City who broke the Premier League record of winning the most games on the bounce and at the rate that they are going they could set a total that will be there for many years to come.
There have only been 16 matches played in the Premier League so far and there is a long way to go. Here are the best odds for the upcoming Premier League games. Thanks to City’s 14 games winning streak through the other teams are all but out of a chance of winning the title and there is still over half a season to go. This is an incredible achievement by Guardiola and his team who now sit on 46 points at the top of the EPL.
It looks like the battle for the title is well and truly over now and the other top five teams will be fighting each other for Champions League qualification. Manchester United have made great strides forward this campaign but they have a long way to go before to catch up to their rivals.
