Kano Pillars missed a chance to secure top position in the Nigeria Professional Football League after going down to a 2-0 defeat to northern rivals El-Kanemi Warriors on Thursday, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
With leaders Rangers failing to extend their lead at the top of the log after going down to a 2-1 defeat against Sunshine Stars on Wednesday, the Sai Masu Gida were tipped to overrun their opponents but they failed to make use of the opportunity.
El-Kanemi Warriors were awarded a penalty in the 23rd minute after the visitors' skipper, Rabiu Ali, handled the ball in the box.
The game was held for four minutes after Pillars players protested the legality of the penalty.
Ibrahim Mustapha then converted from the spot to give the home side the lead in the 28th minute.
It was Mustapha's eighth goal of the campaign and he joined Niger Tornadoes forward, Ismaila Gata, and Okiki Afolabi of Sunshine Stars as the leading marksmen in the NPFL.
Hussaini Mohammed doubled El-Kanemi's lead in the 51st minute.
Pillars toiled hard to reduce the deficit in the closing stages of the game, instead it was Ladan Bosso's men who maintained their two-goal lead and went home with maximum points.
