Enugu Rangers secured top position in the Nigeria Professional Football League with a 2-0 win against Oriental neighbours Abia Warriors at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium, Enugu on Friday, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
With former leaders Wikki Tourists not involved in action until Sunday, the Flying Antelopes put up a commanding performance in front of their fans and moved a point ahead of their title rivals, garnering 43 points to Wikki’s 42.
Abia Warriors dominated the opening exchanges but it was Rangers who went ahead in the 15th minute through Obinna Nwobodo.
Nwobodo collected the ball after an error by Chima Uluocha and fired the ball past John Gaadi from a tight angle.
Rangers were awarded a spot kick in the 33rd minute after Austin Obaroakpor handled the ball in the box which was converted by Chisom Egbuchulam.
Egbuchulam has now scored in all five Oriental derbies he has played in this season.
The midfielder has also now scored in his last four games against Abia Warriors.
The hosts failed to add to their advantage in the second half despite creating a number of chances.
Micheal Olaha pulled a goal back for the visitors on 90 minutes, the second goal they have scored in their last six games.
Abia Warriors have now won just two and drawn two of their last 10 games in the NPFL.
