Wikki Tourists boosted their title hopes following an impressive 2-1 win against MFM FC in a Nigeria Professional Football League matchday 32 fixture at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi on Sunday, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
The win also saw Abdu Maikaba’s men shoot to the top of the standings with 53 points, two ahead of Enugu Rangers who were not in action due to the postponement of their game against Giwa FC.
Godwin Obaje, the league top scorer, increased his haul to 16 after bagging a brace in the encounter.
The forward opened scoring for his side on 18 minutes and doubled the lead in the 36th minute.
Austine Ogunye gave the visitors a lifeline when he hit the back of the net in the 64th minute but they were unable to find the leveller.
At the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano, Rivers United’s title bid suffered a setback as they went down to a 1-0 defeat against Kano Pillars.
Gambo Mohammed scored the winning goal in the 23rd minute.
In Owerri, Heartland boosted their survival hopes with a 1-0 win against fellow strugglers Shooting Stars with Emeka Atuloma grabbing the decisive goal nine minutes before the break.
El-Kanemi Warriors and Sunshine Stars served up a thrilling contest in Maiduguri with the home side triumphing 3-2.
Hussain Bata put the hosts ahead from the spot on nine minutes, while Samad Kadiri equalised for the Owena Waves two minutes later.
El-Kanemi regained the lead five minutes later and were awarded another penalty in the 23rd minute.
The visitors protested the penalty and play was delayed for six minutes before Bata converted his second penalty kick of the game.
Alaba Adeniji reduced the deficit in the 37th minute but Sunshine were unable to find the equaliser.
El-Kanemi Warriors have now won their last 10 games at home.
In-form FC IfeanyiUbah picked the only away win of the weekend after edging out Warri Wolves 1-0 at the Warri City Stadium.
Chijoke Alakwe grabbed the winning goal in the 36 minute, his second in successive games for the Anambra Warriors.

Babangida Hussaini scored in the 21st minute as Akwa United also secured a 1-0 win against Lobi Stars.
