Nwakaeme Unfazed By Nigeria Omission, Targets UCL With Be’er Sheva

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Nigeria striker, Anthony Nwakaeme, is unperturbed by his omission for the Super Eagles two friendly matches against Senegal and Burkina Faso this month, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rhor called up a number of new players for the upcoming friendlies to be played in London at the end of March, but Nwakaeme who has been in good form this season, scoring 11 league goals in 24 matches for his Israeli side Hapoel Be'er Sheva was overlooked.

Nwakaeme, in an interview with Brila FM Tuesday morning, hoped his time to play for Nigerian national team would come and also expressed his joy at the invitation extended to his  friend and teammate at Hapoel Be'er Sheva, John Ogu.

"For me, I believe everything is about time. If it's your time, nobody will stop you. And if you're not invited to the national team, no need to be angry," Nwakaeme told Brila FM.

"Its the coach that decides, and if the coaches invite me in future, I will be there 100%. I wish the team good luck. I'm very happy for 'my brother' John Ogu on his invitation for the games.

On his target for next season, Nwakaeme predicted that a Champions League place will be perfect. Be'er Sheva are currently topping the Israeli 'Ligat Ha'al' with 56 points after 25 matches, three points adrift of Maccabi Tel Aviv.

"We were knocked out in the Champions League qualifiers by Besiktas (5-2 on aggregate), but nonetheless, I was impressed by our Europa League run. Nobody believed we could even qualify for the Champions League play-offs in the first place. I'm still happy Hapoel Be'er Sheva made it into the Europa League.

"The next target is the UEFA Champions League although I'm not setting a target for myself on the number of goals to score this season. I just want to help my club, support the team in my own way."

Hapoel Be'er Sheva will face Beitar Jerusalem in their next league game on Saturday.
