Seattle Sounders striker has been voted the Complete Sports Player of the Month for May in the tightest race for the honour so far.
The award is usually won by a wide margin with one standout player beating two others by hundreds of our readers’ votes. But this time it was very close.
Martins beat Villarreal’s Ikechukwu Uche by just over one per cent of the votes.
The former Newcastle star got 45 per cent of the votes to Uche’s 43.75 per cent. The third nominee, Ramon Azeez, got 11.25 per cent.
Martins has chosen the past few weeks to score brilliant goals and his strikes have regularly been nominated as Goal of the Week in the American Major League Soccer.
The former Inter Milan man, who will be watching the 2014 World Cup on American TV having been dropped by Stephen Keshi, scored a contender for Goal of the Month in the Sounders’ 1-0 win against San Jose Earthquake.
He added another goal in the 4-0 victory over Real Salt Lake, bringing his May tally to two goals and winning accolades from across the USA.
