Obi Set For Eagles Return, Stars For Torino Vs Juve; Rohr Considers CHAN Stars

By Johnny Edward: Torino midfielder, Joel Obi, is set to return to the Super Eagles squad ahead of next month’s international friendlies against Poland and Serbia, four years after he last featured for Nigeria, Completesportsnigeria.com has reliably gathered.

Obi was on from the start for Torino against Turin rivals and champions Juventus in a Serie A clash on Sunday as he continued his impressive form in Italy this season. Juventus won 1-0.
The former Inter Milan star last featured for the Super Eagles in their 2-2 draw against Scotland in a 2014 friendly game in London.

Gernot Rohr’s men will take on Poland and Serbia on March 23 and March 27 respectively.

Obi has been in a rich vein of form in the Italian Serie A, scoring four goals in 17 league games (five goals in 19 games in all competitions).

“He (Joel Obi) brings a different dimension to the team. We saw the Super Eagles play a different system against Argentina and that’s part of the dynamism Rohr is hoping his side can evolve into before the World Cup,” a top source in the Nigerian Football Federation revealed to CSN.

Obi has made 12 international appearances for the Super Eagles since his debut in 2011.

Completesportsnigeria.com also gathered from the source that Rohr will make a late decision on whether to include any of the outfield Home Eagles players in his squad for the games.

“I don’t know as of now mabye later he (Rohr) will decide that,” the source added.

The Super Eagles are drawn in Group D alongside Iceland, Croatia and Argentina for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

This is a good development. I’ve always said we Need a Joel obi in the team. He has a lot to offer in the eagles as he did in the past.

  • Abdul andah 9 months ago

Hope he has completely overcome his injury nightmare.

Joel is always a fantastic player and big match Player whenever he is fit with good frame of mind.
I can’t wait to see him in action once again for the super eagles.
He will definitely enjoy his football with the calibres of the Players in the super eagles set up going to the world cup.
Rohr also need an all round action striker like Cyriel dessers of fc utrecht.

  • I’m elated and can’t wait for his first match under Rohr. I believe he will make positive different in SE squad.

Joel is a fantastic player if he is injury free. He is capable of benching some current established players in the team

Nice player . I pray no injury will come his way again. Good addition . Make we talk true when we see the truth.

Terrific development. A fit Joel Obi will be absolutely vital for the SuperEagles in Russia. How he didn’t go to Brazil in 2014 ahead of Gabriel Reuben still remains a mystery to me. The midfield is loaded with top talents. Mikel, Ndidi, Etebo, Onazi, Obi, Ogu, Agu and possibly Azubuike Okechukwu. Obi to me is a better option than both Agu and Ogu. If fit and remains in top shape Obi, Mikel and Ndidi should be the midfield trio to start in the Mundial proper.

  • Debbie 9 months ago

Yes @actually. I believe Joel is even better than A Nazi and the combo of Mikel, Ndidi and Joel in a midfield is a killer when Joel is fully fit. With that combo our midfield will challenge almost any midfield in Russia.

    • Paschal 9 months ago

Difficult for me to agree with you because of my personal love for Onazi. But if we should be sincere with ourselves, from strictly the football point of view, a 100 percent fit Joel Obi is definitely better than a 100 percent fit Onazi. Truth be told. I see in Joel a reincarnation of Edgar Davids or Gennaro Gatuso. He is a fantastic midfileder. Let us pray injury allows him some fresh air this time.

    #Onazi not A Nazi

This is a great news for us all. Coach Rohr almost putting the team together to give us the best. Therefore, the second and the last problem the coach really need to solve are strikers and goalkeeper’s issues. I’m begging completesports.com to please get in touch with coach Rohr. Against Zambia in last year’s world cup qualifiers, Eagles lacks qualities in front. Not that Zambia were that good but Eagles did not have a striking force.
Thank God we have up to 4 or 5 friendly matches this year before the world cup. Coach Rohr should give our hot strikers a chance. Just a chance. Players like Ike Uche, Obafemin Martin’s, Paul Onuchi, Cyriel dessers, and one guy that plays in MSL league, I don’t remember his name, deserves a call from coach Rohr.
Lastly, Akpeyi is not a world class goalkeeper. We Need the best for this year world cup. We don’t want to get to the femis only but we want to win the world cup. Anything short of that is not acceptable. Pray hard, dream big, work hard and the victory is ours. God bless Nigeria!!!

Amen. Let us start with elimination method first: Those who should first be dropped so that new faces can be invited: Number one is Daniel Akpeyi: Even a blind man will agree with me on him. Number 2 is Echiejile, I think he is past his best. Number 3 is Anthony Nwakaeme, he is too fat and lacks direction. Number 4 is Isaac Success, also too fat and undecided about what to do with himself. First among those to be invited is: Joel Obi then any other can follow.

Good addition Joel obi if fully fit can Marshall Nigeria midfield any day anytime. Good to go Joel obi, good to go SE of Nigeria.

  • Ifeanyi 9 months ago

I think with the return of Joel obi our midfield is settled. The coach needs to look into the strikers and goal keeping department. I also suggest that Paul onuachu, cyril desseri, obafemi Martin’s and probably junior ajayi should be invited for the next month friendly matches.

    • Paschal 9 months ago

You are damn too right on Junior Ajayi. The young man is hot and on fire in Egypt.

  • Edoman of New Jersey, USA. 9 months ago

We need Paul Onuachu at that striking position. Forget about Akpeyi as a goalkeeper.
Give Paul a chance. He is deadly with both legs in the box. He scored more goals than any Nigerian this season. Paul is far better and younger than Odion Ighalo.

  • Sint. 9 months ago

Alot has been said of Paul Onuachu. I hope Mr. Rohr has a listening ear. If he is not around I think Malam YUSUF can deliver the message. Listen to your supporters. They serve as your abasador or scouts in other leagues.

morning Nigeria is a good call up obi

  • Paul Williams 9 months ago

Is a welcome development for eagles if joel is back, he is a very nice midfielder i saw him play for Torino. Not only that Rohr should also try players like, Dennis bonaventure, Cyril desser, Clement maduka okoye the young goalkeeper, Paul onuche, Jordon ibe and Fabian Senninger.they are very at their club sides. I think they will add more quality in the team and please leave Akpaehi and Enyeama, Enyeama have tried for Nigeria, let allow him to rest.

  • Abdul andah 9 months ago

Pls BTW Paul onuachu and Cyriel dessers of fc utrecht who is better?
I think dessers is better based on the league (Dutch league ) he’s playing in.
Although, I have watched Paul clips and I must confess, that guy is skillful with great precision.

Rohr should goal to Netherlands and Denmark and watch these two guys respectively rather than going to Germany to watch Anthony ujah.
Ujah had been given chance before and he didn’t take it on several occasions.
For the two or three of the times he played for super eagles I didn’t know he was in the match until I saw him being substituted.

  • Paul Williams 9 months ago

Kavin Akpoguma and Felix Uduokhai are very good defenders and plays in Germany. Mr Rohr please get them for us.

    • Abdul andah 9 months ago

The super eagles need those two guys if actually we really wanna plan and go beyond the level we had gone before in the world cup.
I hope Rohr we talk to them like a father and make them see reasons why playing for Nigeria would help their careers on the international scene.

    • Baadom christian 9 months ago

Our coach should try left winger Samuel adegbenro in rosenburg a chance to prove himself, his quality and international press comparing him to jay jay okocha with his skill. Another one is d striking position Martins obafemi Dennis bonaventure, Paul onuachi cyriel desser should be consider finally midfield position Joel obi should join combination with mikel, Ndidi, etebo, john ogu please u people should help me tell Rohr our coach to apply (352) formation so that midfield can help our defence because i don’t trust our defence, goalkeeping side should be Francis ozoho, maduka okoye the young star and ezenwa. Thanks u all..

  • Innocent 9 months ago

Joel is a very good mifida.rohr should cobined mikel, joel, ndidi together in d midfield then reserve john ogu for second half by bringing out mikel and introducing john ogu,i bet u modrid, rackitich and d rest will suffer then nigeria will over come them by winning d match.against crotia first half, balogun, ekongi, musa muhammed to play ichegeli wing then brown idowu to play 2.d mifield, mikel obi to be substituted by john ogu in second half, joel obi, ndidi.then in attack, moses simon, kelechi ihanacho, and one other sharp atter.den second half, iwobi, victor moses should come in for ihanacho and other attacker not simon.i promise u nigeria will win d match.rohr should try dis formation.

  • Slekky 9 months ago

I cannot gamble him to the world cup, because of his history through injury, my personal opinion lets take the present players who fought to get to the world cup, Joel is good, but i cannot relax and see him going through injury, no, let him stay out.

  • Abdul andah 9 months ago

    *will*

  • Diran 9 months ago

For goalkeeping, Rohr should take the trio of Francis Uzoho, Ezenwa and Maduka Okoye to Russia. In attack, he needs to give the all action striker – Cyriel Dessers who plays in the Netherlands a chance along with Fanendo Addi who plays in the Major league Soccer in the US and also possibly try Obafemi Martins again to beef up the Nigerian attack with quality and goal hungry forwards.
