Former Super Eagles forward Osaze Odemwingie has tipped Lionel Messi to win the Golden Boot award at the 2018 FIFA World Cup which kicks off in Russia today.
Argentina will begin their campaign on Saturday against Iceland at the Spartak Moscow Stadium hoping to land their third World Cup title. They will face Croatia and Nigerian in their remaining group games.
Odemwingie, 36, featured for Nigeria at two FIFA World Cups in 2010 and 2014 and played professionally in Belgium, England and Russia.
“I thinks Leo Messi will secure the Golden Boot, and for very good reason, as it’s likely to be Messi’s last World Cup,” Odemwingie said on CNN World Sport.
“I hope he doesn’t score goals against Nigeria.”
Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 81 goals for Portugal while Messi has scored 64 international goals for Argentina leading to the World Cup.
Brazil’s captain, Neymar is tied on third spot with Polish striker Robert Lewandoski at the international level with 55 goals for Brazil while Luiz Suarez completes the top five with 51 goals.
