By Adeboye Amosu: Wikki Tourists head coach Abdu Maikaba and his Shooting Stars counterpart, Gbenga Ogunbote are in the running to get a role in the new Super Eagles coaching set-up, Completesportsnigeria.com can exclusively report.
Former Kano Pillars coach, Salisu Yusuf who guided the team in recent friendly wins against Mali and Luxembourg is also a strong contender for the position of the assistant coach, but he now face strong competition from the two tacticians who have distinguish themselves with various teams in the Nigeria Professional Football League in recent seasons, a reliable source close to the team revealed to Completesportsnigeria.com.
Maikaba guided a modest Wikki side to a respectable fourth place finish in the NPFL last season, and the Bauchi- based side currently occupy first position in the table, two more than second placed Enugu Rangers.
Ogunbote who once guided Sunshine Stars to the last four of the CAF Confederations Cup and the Champions League in two successive years has also improved his profile in recent years by making big impact with Sharks and 3SC.
"It's no news that the Nigeria Football Federation has decided to hire a foreign coach for the Super Eagles, but it's not certain yet who will work as assistant coaches to the expatriate,"the source disclosed to Completesportsnigeria.com.
"Though Salisu did a good job with team by winning those two friendly matches, there are no guarantee that he will be part of the new technical crew.
"Ogunbote and Maikaba are two of the best coaches in the country at the moment and they are under serious consideration by the Nigeria Football Federation for the job of the assistant coach.
"They (NFF) have a tough job on their hands as Salisu has not done badly in his role as caretaker coach and also a good knowledge of the team having worked as assistant under the late Stephen Keshi and Sunday Oliseh.
"Imama Amapakabo( Enugu Rangers coach) and Kennedy Boboye (Abia Warriors coach) who assisted Salisu in the two friendlies are not likely to retain their positions.
"I strongly believe they will surely make a good choice at the end of the day."
The NFF are expected to release a short-list of candidates for the vacant position of Super Eagles coach on Friday.
