Okagbare, Ahoure Battle For 100m Gold In Marakech Today

–At the African Athletics Championships

Commonwealth Games fastest woman,Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare and Cote D’Ivoire’s Muriel Ahoure, double silver medallist at the IAAF World Championships last year in Moscow,
Russia will set the track of the Marakech stadium on fire this evening as they battle to be crowned Africa’s fastest woman.

Okagbare ran a new 10.85 100m Games record last week to win her first major title at the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow,Scotland and looks the athlete in shape to win her second African Championships blue ribband title following her debut win at the championships in Nairobi,Kenya in 2010.

In Ahoure who pipped the Nigerian to the 100m silver medal last year in Moscow,Okagbare will have her sternest test in the last forthnight.

Ahoure has become a real force to reckon with since her emergence on the international track scene in 2012 when she ran in the finals of both the 100m and 200m event at the London Olympics.

She had earlier in Istanbul,Turkey won a silver medal in the 60m event at the IAAF World Indoor Championships,a feat she repeated early this year in Sopot,Poland.

This season, the Ivorian holds a personal season’s best of 10.97 but has been in sharper shape since then.

The stage is thus set for a very titanic battle for two athletes who want to lay claim to being Africa’s fastest woman.

Apart from the gold medal and a place in the African team to the IAAF intercontinental cup holding between between 13 and 14 September 2014 also in Marrakech in contention, the 11.03 championships record set by Okagbare in 2010 will also likely be in contention.
