–Ex-Eagles star says Keshi deserved to go
By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:
Former Green Eagles winger Folorunsho Okenla has backed the Nigeria Football Federation for not renewing Stephen Keshi’s contract as Super Eagles Head Coach.
Okenla who played alongside Keshi in the 80s said the former Eagles skipper does not deserve to get a new contract because he has lost the zeal to coach the team.
“I must commend the NFF for having the gut to call Keshi’s bluff and ask him to leave. I don’t pity him because he was the architect of his fall from grace. He was trying to play ‘god’.
“Keshi lost the control of the Eagles dressing room with his clashes with some of the players. When coach losses the locker room like Keshi did, it often spells doom for the team, so I would not weep for him.
“That is why I am not commending the NFF for the decision not to renew his contract. Keshi did well at the onset but he lost it after the AFCON victory in South Africa when he became uncontrollable” said the former Shooting Stars.
He said the choice of Amodu Shuaibu as interim coach may not be the best but he expects the veteran coach to do his best by bringing back the unity of the team and win the two games left.
Okenla who is now a business man and sports consultant wants the new coaches to keep the players they inherited from Keshi with just few additions to the squad adding it will not be proper to change the chemistry of the team now.
