Okocha Blames Rohr For Super Eagles Defeat To Croatia

Okocha Blames Rohr For Super Eagles Defeat To Croatia

By Johnny Edward:

Former Super Eagles captain Austin Okocha has slammed Gernot Rohr for his poor tactical approach in Nigeria’s 2-0 defeat to Croatia in their opening game at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

An own goal from Oghenekaro Eteno and a penalty from Luka Modric extended Nigeria’s winless streak in opening World Cup game to four.

Okocha who starred for Nigeria in three FIFA World Cups in 1994, 1998 and 2002 also faulted the team’s poor defending which led to the two goals conceded in each half.

“It was a decent first half but maturity was the edge the Croatian team had over the Nigerian team,” Okocha said on SuperSport, where he was a guest analyst, after the game.

“The Super Eagles got done by the movements of the Croatian team in their box. The Super Eagles midfielders were not doing their best both in defending and in attack.

“Eagles didn’t geg the best out of Alex Iwobi and Victor Moses because the manager was trying to accommodate Mikel Obi in the team.

“The manager didn’t earn his money today. We were not a threat in the first half and I was expecting him to play three at the back, five players in the midfield and two strikers to the team a chance to get back into the game.

“It is sad because I know we can do better than this. Of course there is still hope but we have to do it the hard way now.

“These (Croatians) are world class players who know how to win by exploiting little details.”

Okocha also blamed Rohr for deploying Mikel in the creative role.

“We didn’t have a creative player today,” the former Nigeria No.10 added. “Mikel has been a good servant to the national team. His best position is playing in front of the defence. We saw what he did playing for Chelsea where he had a glorious career.

“The most creative player in that team is Alex Iwobi but he was played on the flanks. He (Iwobi) can play on the flanks at Arsenal because they had better players in that role like Mesut Ozil.

“The reason why we lost was because we played our best players out of their positions.

“Playing Mikel in that position didn’t help Moses and Iwobi on the flanks.”

  • Rohr is a big fool and he should go to hell with his coaching crew

We lost to timid tactics by coach Rohr and weak players.how can you play defensive in world cup.Nigeria is known for pacy and quick break attack.how can a coach and players not learn how to defend corner for two years.

I agree with Okocha. Mikel has no business playing advanced role in the midfield.

  • Nicolsen 5 months ago

I agreevwt jay jay.. and i must also add.. Rohr needs to be sacked abeg

  • Exactly!! and we have no business playing 4-2-3-1 with ighalo up top alone.. I don’t understand why rohr keeps stubbornly sticking with ighalo, when we have players like kelechi that can change the game in a flash!! Rohr really killed our chances today with his choice of formation and tactics. And painful thing was even after half time he made no changes until later in the game.. It just feels fishy like he (rohr) is trying to sabotage our chances after ALL the work we have put in over the last 2 years to get here. It’s a real shame..

    • I would not call it sabotage, just incompetence and weak-mindedness. Like others before him, his strings are being pulled by “big” players. Mikel wants to play “10” even though the whole world knows he is not a “10”. If he plays at all, it should be alongside Ndidi [if we have 4 midfielders] or between Ndidi and Etebo [if we have 3 in midfield [either in a 4-3-3 0r w 3-5-2].

Yomi, you are not right. Much as i agree with playing 3.5.2 ,I disagree with JJ on comparing his Nephew with the much skillful and experience Mikel Obi. ,Mikel is more creative than the young Alex and any even other player in the squad right now for the 10 role . We have tried Iwobi and others several times there ,and they  cant do it.in fact thought 90 mins,Alex n etebo couldn’t pass one ball across to ihancho. Watch the video ,you will confirm. Anytime he clicks is when Mikel plays. Much as JJ got some areas right, ….there is a bit of biase  in JJ analysis especially comparing Alex and Mikel at a world stage.Football get level.

        • godwin agundu 5 months ago

@Kekee I fully agree with you. Iwobi many times plays school boy football. If he thrives in Arsenal from the flanks, why did he disappear in our game against Croatia playing the same role. Throughout the entire match, the only player who made any good attacking pass was Mikel so what’s Okocha saying? Okocha’s attempt to bring down our poor performance on Mikel is to say the least self serving. How can he insinuate that Mikel does not merit a place in that largely inexperienced team? That for me is self serving. Mikel’s touches on the ball are the best by any Nigerian player in the team.

        • You are wrong! The most skillful player in that team is Iwobi, he should be our no 10, Mikel should be a defensive midfielder while Ndidi or Etebo should be an attacking 4

    • Ike, I said thesame thing! Rohr is trying to sabotage us…

I was saying this on the official handle of the super eagles on instagram while the game was going on. Bad tactics should have played iwobi in a creative role…mikel had no business in the attacking midfield role. He would have fitted in a more holding role and helped defend from the defensive midfield role. Coach killed the game by making a stupid decision to substitute Iwobi for Musa like that was the answer. Rohr or what’s his name needs to get this little things right. I don’t blame the players the coach has to be disciplined here.

We were all here 2days ago when Complete Sport wrote about the formation Rohr wanted used. We all said to would not work.
Okocha is correct, Mikel has no job in the creative midfield.
This coach tested this 4-3-3 and did not produce result during friendly with England (first half). It is very disheartening that he didn’t change the formation after he saw it didn’t work in the first half.
It really looks like he purposely wants to sabotage the game.

  • There’s still hope does Nigeria

  • dowell 5 months ago

I think one of the main problem with the team if not the main problem, is playing without game plan. I could not tell if they were trying to play tikitaka, counter attacking or crossing into the box. but they just kept on making backward passes, holding on too much to the ball and not taking any risk at all, little wonder they called us a disorganized team. no plan to score at all just hoping opponents make mistakes and we score lucky goal. nawah o

  • ROHR MUST GO!!!!!

  • 3-5-2
Uzoho in goal – he will keep improving
Balogun, Ekong, Omeruo = 3 centrehalves
Ebuehi and Echejile – Wing backs [better than Shehu and Idowu by far]
Etebo, Ndidi, Mikel [3 in midfield]
Iheanacho, Musa [Musa playing a little withdrawn so he can run onto balls with his pace] …2 “strikers” [Musa is not really a striker but his pace can make him effective]

  • Edoman of New Jersey, USA. 5 months ago

Rohr MUST GO. All we are saying, Rohr must go Home. No more foreign couch for Nigeria. Foreign couches are too corrupt, dumb and stupid.

  • Wait! Na which kind training rohr and these boys come dey do for the past few days? Abeg do make you come collect your sack letter.

This is what would happened when you failed to listening to people around you. So sad that it is to late for Coach Rohr to do miracle.

I believe in God that anything is possible but in this situation is like, what do we want God to do? God favoured us in so many ways leading us to the world cup in Russia but this coach failed us all.

I am not shocked with the outcome of this match because I saw it coming but Nigerians hates the truth. And the truth already been known today. Hopefully, the coach will learnt his leason in a hard way. God bless Nigeria!!!

Sometimes l wonder these things with so called professional coaches, maybe it’s sabotage or something like a writer’s block. I’m glad most of us that are not even coaches have been saying the same things. All it takes is for one to have played soccer. Everyone told this coach Croatia was our easiest chance, deploy a 3-5-2 formation. Their power lies in the midfield, so choke them up. Play Iwobi, iheanacho and moses together, play ighalo and Simeon together as strikers. U don’t have to play Mikel, as seen in prep matches, he’s burned out. Bring him in second half to hold possession when the team already has lead. Let Musa run flank, and Ebuhe from right full back. Croatia would have been easy peasy. They had no strong attack nor meaningful shots at goal. And that’s known right from their qualifying matches. But our Almighty professional foreign coach was not better than a junior school league gaffer today. Maybe it’s time for real test of competence. The coach not the boys lost the game for us. Though they need to show some hunger for success too sometimes besides the coaching screw ups.

  • Djeniko 5 months ago

Okocha is right. I was listening to Crown FM and it was said that Gernot Rohr intend to deploy Mikel Obi as a defensive midfielder just like he did for 10 years playing well for Chelsea fc. Gernot Rohr forgot. People advised that he has shown us all the formations and the 3-5-2 works for Nigeria. It was an unanimously voted for. We thought he was intelligent and smart for introducing this formation into our system. He forgot. My advice: try the 3-5-2 formations with Iceland. It nay work.

If l were in the Stadium there today en, one dirty slap l would have landed in Rohr’s face, one or two teeth would have fallen off from his stinking mouth. He better not follow the team home or he will be dearth with severely. l warmed him about allowing Ighalo to be our Stricker. He took money from Ighalo under the table and now we will come home after three matches.

No treats poised by Supereagles from the unset to the sunset of the game.Infact the out come started from the coach whose being dormant to sticking or change non working formation in the second half of the game.More deployment mildfiled file would have Savage us this lost.3 5 2 formation by removing Ekong while bringing One more striker would have done us.Ighalo was left alone without any supporter Who is more or least no play maker but perfetto finushing role.

COACH ROHR SABOTAGING NIGERIA WORLD CUP!
mikel obi wasn’t even there! Nigeria team lacked and showed No effort, no fight, no tackle, no hunger, no ideas, wrongest tactics and formation and line up!
Rohr was like shehu and ighalo qualified us so whether they perform or not they must play on even if they both suck!
Friendly matches are meant to know ur TEAM but Rohr stuck with our pattern which was ok in Africa but outdated in European football! We saw that a 3-5-2 was suitable to get out and play football outside Africa but they stucked to a tried and testedly failed formation and gifted Croatia a win. Any award for been a young team? Where is ideye experience? Where is Efe Ambrose experience? Kelechi and his brother were supposedly unscouted and undiscovered? Nigeria na wa! Where is our YOUTH tried n tested goal predators? Awoniyi, osimeh, usma sadik, musa MOHAMMED and the nwakalis? Nigeria is never serious instead They turned our to national enterprise to make for bribery and corruption and money change hand company!
My verdict is. No need to form prayers when you are so poor a team! Play your last two matches and deservedly GET sent OUT and sack Rohr without FURTHER delay! WE HAVE FINIDI AMUNIKE AND PETER IJEH AND ADEPOJU WITH THE UEFA LICENCE A COACHING QUALIFICATION. SALISU YUSUF IS A YES SIR COACH AND SHOULD BE SACKED. IGHALO AND MIKEL CHINA PRODUCT MUST BE THANKED AND SUBSEQUENTLY IGNORED FOREVER. AMAJU PINNICH MUST BE KICK OUT! Because failure na failure NO EXCUSE AND EXPLANATION. Na xo!

  • With all my post at times I go change name to olu . Dele . Rohr. On dis blog.  Give me dis same team dat ĺose to croatia .Brazil go cry. Dis was d time of game eagles played against Korea in 2010. Ther opponent  found space in all areas to operate easily on d field. See igallo/ yakubu. See d guy holding an attack in d box. Compare to red card against Korea in 2010. D same formation will get eagles  beaten by iceland with wide margin.  If something  is not done fast. Ordinary formation dey used to beat cameroon  in awka would  ve gien dem victory yesterday.  With litte energy.  I’m sure if na argentina   eagles met yesterday  den d score would be close to 7 :0 u know  den dey vex now because of d 4    2 loss some months ago in Russia to eagle.  Dey shud play 4 4 2 without igallo. Igallo is falling down and not fast in thinking.and is not marking from middle. Pls correct my English be4 u read . I dey wor.

  • Rohr’s is a disgrace to coaches and sorry to say he and his coaching crew lack the tactical approach to a games. All through his friendlies he lost, he played with the same player’s and tactics that saw him lost three games. Him and his coach crew never learned from their mistake’s or lesson from the lost. The formation never fit or the player’s was played out of their position in the formation. what is Mike Obi playing as an offensive player’s when he has no speedy to attacked.Three friendly he played him there and Nigeria lost, He never learned lesson NO changed, FOOLISH COACH. SHEWU ADULAYI right back don’t help defense or forward it was seen in the friendly against England no change to that. Moses was playing deep because of this at first half. FOR CRYING OUT LOUD NIGERIA TEAM HAS WHAT IT TAKE’S TO PLAY GOOD FOOTBALL AND QUALIFIED FROM THE GROUP. BUT ROHR’S AND HIS COACHING CREW, SPOILED EVERY EFFORT MADE BY THIS PLAYER AND THE NIGERIA SUPPORTER. SOLUTION: Etebor Oghenekaro or Ewobi should be played where Mike Obi is playing right now. Shewu the right back should not be use in our next match instead Ebuechi should come in. Nigeria player’s should be attacking, fight for the ball when they loss it. Substitution should be made on time. ROHR’S IS THE CAUSE OF SUPPER EAGLE LOST. WELL DONE ROHR’S FOOLISH.

  • Anyway d second goal was a gift to d croatia.  It was only d referree dat saw it . Even d croatian player drag his nija make too

ROHR MUST GO ,HE IS THE PROBLEM NOT THE PLAYERS !

I was disappointed at the start of the match wen I saw 4 2 3 1 and knew we weren’t going anywhere with that system because we have tried several times with no success. Every country have a system that works. 4 4 1 1 or 3 5 2 always works for us effortlessly. All hope is not lost. Beat Iceland and Argentina and we are done

    • Buhari 5 months ago

You can only beat them if you have a game plan and use your players properly.

  • Buhari 5 months ago

Rohr is an He goat. The substitutions were even funny. Removing Iwobi to put Musa, so he can continue the same system that wasn’t working. Then removing Mikel to put Simy. Iheanacho for Ighalo… who does that. I swear i’m not watching super eagles match anymore. Saudi Arabia plays better just that they don’t have a striker and keeper. Nigeria is d worse team so far in the tournament.

The problem is not the coach let him play anybody we will still mess up..we must be frank with our selves..we only got average players who cant be compared with the 90s set..they are only overhyped and overrated by we the fans..why do u think big clubs dont come for our players anymore but prefer to buy from other African countries…Nigeria has won only 1 game out of his last 11 games at the World cup…majority of our players are all about the money and living large..most of them are less concerned about improving their footballing education..reason why u see them sleep on social media trying to get all the attention they can get cos they know their performance cant get them such attention..during the era of the Okochas and co..even when the coach’s plan isnt goin thru..the players take it upon themselves to salvage the situation…we should even be gratful to this coach who brought our football back from the dead..nobody gave them a chance to qualify cos we didnt qualify for the last 2 nations cup..it was that worse.

A huge disapointment! But we have a chance to make it, the tournament need hardworking players whit counter attaking prowes. Mikel should be excluded and introduce Iwobi there and Musa and Moses by the wing; the three supporting the two forward in the 3 5 2 formation. Thanks

  • Bros JJ,I greet you, we all have seen what happened with our first game with Croatia, that was to poor for our country Nigeria.
But nevertheless this is not the time for blames, we don’t always have to allow things to go wrong before we that blaming others for what went wrong, we could correct they mistakes before their made!!
Bros JJ you know i respect you in all areas, your the best of all times,
all I’m saying is that if you know in anyway you can help the super eagles.
Please do, you’ve been there done that and I believe you have all it takes to do it for your country, is not a command but an idea from your little bro, God bless you and your family..

Mikel lacked movement (pace) so it was easy to close him down early, thus putting a lot of pressure on the back six, turning every offensive play by Nigeria to a counter attack for Croatia. Modric& Rakitic saw this and exploited it really Good. Kele should play with Iwobi…….always

  • akeem 5 months ago

Reading JJ comment , now l know l read the game well because what he said was my exact view. The only creative player we have in the team are iwobi and moses and the were played out of position. Especially, l expect iwobi to play as supporting striker linking ball from midfield to igalo. Unfortunately the coach did what he did at our last 2 friendlies and got same result. Mikel as outlive his age as creative and attacking midfielder but the coach seem not to realise that. No any incisive move , no any penetrative passed and no cohesive attack, eagles just really on individual player’s brilliance to score goals unfortunately we lack such brilliancy in the team. For me l think its over. I doubt us beating the well disciplined Iceland not to talk of beating Argentina. So, the story continues : early exit for super eagles

  • Am surprise we are now criticizing Rhor for not knowing what his best formation is or what the best positions for his best players are. Bonfree Joe talked about it last time only for so many  of us lamenting now to give him loads of sticks by insinuating we were content with our mediocrity. In a simple sentence, I think what we got is what we saw but refused to admit. Ighalo was ineffective because he was played alone up front and adding to that was the fact that no one really fed him the way a striker would be fed. Moses was not at his best as well as Iwobe because they were played out of position. Kelechi came in and added loats of urgencies to the game and we were left to wonder what would have been if he was played from onset.

First of all i will blame Gernot Rohr for not changing his tactics at halftime which saw us not offensive and creative enough to trouble d croatians. Alex n moses were not in d game at halftime. Why not make changes in d midfield to bring Alex n iwobi back to d game. Mikel was not creative at all at d no. 10 role when compared to d likes of iniesta or modric. What Rakitic did yesternite is wat mikel should be doing 4 d team. Fighting and winning balls back. He should has drop mikel deep and allow Etebo to play dat no. 10 who was creative than him to bring d best out of Iwobi n Moses. Secondly, Rohr must learn d defence how to defend set pieces, corners and how to track back when fail on a counter attacks cuz if not 4 dat mistakes at least a draw could have been a fair result becus croatia were not at their best too considering d quality of players they have. Thirdly, Ighalo is not doing well 4 d team right now. He is a good player. But he should be drop in our next match 4 Kelechi. I hope he(Rohr) must have learnt his lesson. I still believe we can qualify.

  • Diamond k. 5 months ago

Its well noted. Our mistakes are all well pointed out. The coach for me takes the blame. Now our next match, i’d suggest 4:1:3:1:1
GK- Uzoho. DF-ebuehi,omeruo,balogun,idowu. DM- ndidi. MF- moses, etebo, musa. SS- iwobi. FW- iheanacho. OR we play 3:2:3:2.

  • Destiny Maximus 5 months ago

We messed up because of the formation which was wrong. Meanwhile okocha should not compare Mikel with his nephew, iwobi was not in the game. Mikel should play as a defensive midfielder, while etebo should push forward. Iheanacho, iwobi and Moses should attack while shehu and idowu should be changed. We have what it takes to win any club if our players are well managed. Okocha stop your hate words over Mikel, how could you say that nigeria are trying to accommodate Mikel. To me Mikel, ndidi and Moses was our 3 best players out of eleven yesterday.

  • As much as i agree with everyone opinion though the coach made a mistake but calling for his head, i don’t think will do us any good. Who are we going to bring? is it not the same Siasia, Amokachi, Eguavon etc? they have all been tested and they did not fare any better. people were saying he accommodated Mikel at the detriment of mosses and Iwobi, don’t think so he was so conscious of Cro atia midfield which everyone has been talking about because he knew our full back were not that good. We could see that most of their corner kick came from Sehu. They concentrated on that side and hit us from set pieces. I hope he play Ebuehi and Iheanacho and try 352 formation in our next match.Above all let’s support the team and hope for good outing in the remaining matches. God bless Nigeria.

    • I LAUGH HARD WHAT GAVE YOU PEOPLE THE IMPRESSION THAT YOUR COACH HAS TIME TO LISTEN TO ALL THESE CSN COMMENTS OTHERWISE THAT SELECTION WOULD NOT INCLUDE IGHALO AND SHEHU AT ALL.

rohr believes in 2nd chance. and that failed us yesterday. I think he needs tutorials..

  • pa2ta2ra 5 months ago

    pls worthy of note,
(Ighalo) is not the type of striker one should rely on to be playing a lone striking role, we needed a goal getter, someone who has his eyes on goal to be on the striking midfield role and I believe (Mikel) is not one, (itebo) should have better field up that role and all this changes could have come earlier in the second half.
I don’t think (itebo) became the highest goal scorer playing with the junior boys back in the years playing the deeper role he played today.

  • Jacob 5 months ago

The coach should have changed the pattern in the second half to enable us equalize and score more goals. Anyway, there is hope but in a hard way. The coach should be given a second chance to prove his worth.

  • Peter 5 months ago

The so called perisic,Modric and co were very ordinary. The Nigerian boys are simply unreliable abi Troost,Leon,Ndidi and co no dey defend set piece for their club.

  • There is need for a supporting striker in the team. This approach frees the main striker to face the goal. Ighalo only receives the ball from midfield while backing the opponents goal; this leaves him with the slim chance of turning to shoot. It’s a pity the coach still repeated this approach on the grand stage. It’s clear that our team would have done better than this.
On this note, I strongly advise that Ighalo and Iheanacho should play together cos that’s what the latter does with Vardy. Etebo(advanced) and Ndidi in midfield. Iwobi and Moses on the flanks. Ebuehi for Shehu.
Determination and organisation is the key.I believe we can qualify.

    • Kendo 5 months ago

The issue is that Rohr does not want to drop Mikel for any reason. Even more baffling is the decision to still retain Shehu on that right wing.
If you watch the Croatia match,he was the weak link. Modric kept putting pressure on that wing.
We need a very mobile midfield that moves and take the battle to the opponents.
Okocha is right, the coach tactics is based on retaining Mikel in that midfield.

  • Hi, it is our opportunity to win the world cup this year.but what I saw at the first match. If we didn’t change the our formation we will be out from tournament. Because Nigeria team use winger to weak to win match and again Mikel need to drop let play 3_5_2 formation so we can come back to the game.
