Okocha Named Best Dribbler In World Cup In 52 Years!

By James Agberebi:

Legendary Nigeria midfielder Austin Okocha has been revealed as the player with the most dribbles in a FIFA World Cup match in 52 years.

The rating was done by sports facts and stats website Opta Sports on their verified Twitter handle Optajoe.

According to Opta, Okocha made 15 dribbles in the Super Eagles round of 16 clash against Italy at the 1994 World Cup.

It was the most made since the 1966 World Cup in England.

“Since 1966, the most dribbles completed in a World Cup match is 15, by Jay Jay Okocha for Nigeria against Italy in July 1994,” Opta tweeted on Wednesday.

Despite playing with 10 men following the sending off of Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola, Italy came from 1-0 down to beat the Super Eagles 2-1.

Roberto Baggio scored both Italy goals after Emmanuel Amuneke had given the Eagles a first-half lead.

Even Ronaldinho claimed that Okocha is his role model, the guy learned a lot of tricks from Jay Jay esp. D leg-over but not better than him.

Next time Usman Muhammad will be the best dribbler because of his goal against athletico Madrid

  • dats an achievement though… My biggest pain was that Jay Jay Okocha didn’t score much goal as we would have loved to see.
Maybe that contributed to his inability to win the African Footballer of the year. But all the same, if na dribble, I remove head dressing for am…#RESPECT!!!

Yes! he was and still is a good dribbler no doubt. but those dribblers didn’t take us anywhere at the world cup. that particular match against Italy, He was more interested in showboating and entertaining the crowd than push for a forward play. Reason why the coach is always at loggerhead with his style of play.I think he got more matured with his play after the world cup

No doubt.. Jay Jay merited this accolade as he was and still is a good dribbler of the ball. But where did his dribbles take us to? In that particular match against Italy, He was busy showing off and entertaining the crowd rather that push for forward play. You will remember he is always not in the coach’s good books cos of his dribbles.I must say he got a bit matured with his style of play after that world cup, but Jay Jay will always be great dribbler of the ball.
