—Nigeria Coach Opens Up On Ibe, Iheanacho
EXCLUSIVE By Johnny Edward:
Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, has hinted that there will be some unexpected names in the list when he announces his overseas-based squad later in August.
“I won’t rule out surprises in the list for the players based abroad,” Oliseh told completesportsnigeria.com exclusively.
“But I still have to visit some match venues in Europe this weekend and next before deciding on who will be available or not.”
He however refused to divulge names of the surprise inclusions for the game against Tanzania in Dar-es-Salaam when completesportsnigeria.com asked if Manchester City’s teen star Kelechi Iheanacho will be rewarded with a call-up for his excellent displays in pre-season.
“I don’t know and if I do, I won’t share with you,” he added.
He also revealed that his meeting with Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe was fruitful but was quick to add that nothing is guaranteed at least for now.
“We still have to make him see why Nigeria is a better option for him. Talks are still on as regards that,” Oliseh told completesportsnigeria.com.
The new Eagles boss reassured Nigerians that standards will not be compromised as he insists only the best players are good enough for Nigeria.
Oliseh also revealed how difficult it was for him pruning down the home-based squad list from to 23.
Oliseh who expects a stiff competition when camping kicks off in Abuja in a fortnight told completesportsnigeria.com exclusively that more players are still being considered from the pool of names shortlisted if these selected ones don’t measure up.
The former national team skipper handed fresh call-ups to seven new players
for the upcoming away fixture against Tanzania overlooking notable names such as Azubuike Egwuekwe, Rabiu Ali, Chigozie Agbim and a host of others.
But the likes of Ifeanyi Mathew, Usman Mohammed, Azubuike Okechukwu, Lordson Ichull, Tunde Adeniji , Jamiu Alimi and Prince Aggrey were handed a chance to prove themselves in the new-look Home Eagles.
“It was a tough call because I had to prune the list down from 51 players to 23 for this fixture to arrive at this list,” Oliseh added.
“We have a task ahead and we won’t compromise on standards in getting the best players to feature for the senior national team.”
