Nigeria U-23s opponents at the Rio 2016 Olympics football event, Colombia, will be without their star striker Andrés Rentería who suffered a knee injury in training, Completesportsnigeria.com can report.
The Queretaro of Mexico striker sustained a knock on his knee in training and after several tests in Barranquilla, the striker has been ruled out of the squad traveling to Rio.
According to Colombian daily, elpais.com.co, coach Carlos Restrepo is yet to decide on who to replace the forward with Arley Rodriguez and Jarlan Barrera in line to replace Rentería who has scored eight times for the team.
Meanwhile, Colombia who last participated at the Olympics at the Barcelona in 1992 where they finished bottom in the group which had Spain, Qatar and Egypt, are desperate to qualify for the quarter-finals for the first time in 24 years.
They will face Nigeria, Sweden and Japan in Group B.
According to Restrepo, their goal is to survive from the group.
Resstrepo told elpais.com.co: “Now the goal this 2016 is to reach a quarter-final place and fight for a medal.”
They face Sweden in their opening group game in Manaus before facing Nigeria in Sao Paulo three days later.
