Omeruo: Eagles Will Retain AFCON In Morocco

By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:

Kenneth Omeruo has boasted that the Super Eagles have what it takes to retain the African Cup of Nations Cup in Morocco next year.

Omeruo told Complete Sports in Abuja that the Super Eagles will be better than the squad that won the 2013 AFCON in South African because the team is more exposed and mature now.

“We still have most of the squad members that won the cup in South Africa and I believe we can only improve. We’ll miss the likes of Osaze and Yobo but we can cope without them now they are retired from international football,” he told Complete Sports in Abuja.

“Many people may not give us much chance of retaining the AFCON but I am confident that we can go there and retain the trophy. We still have the quality to beat any team in Africa.”

On why he is returning to Middlesbrough FC on loan Omeruo said that he had to go back to Boro because Jose Mourinho told him that he is not in his plans for the season.

Omeruo said he had wanted to stay and fight for his place in Chelsea, adding that after discussing with the coach, he saw reasons and agreed to go on loan to Boro.

The former youth international player who featured in all four Super Eagles matches at the World Cup in Brazil said he would have preferred to go on loan to a Premier League side but that he had little options.

“I know I can fight for playing time successfully but it is not about me but about the club and what they want. Again, I feel I would get more playing time in Boro than in Chelsea.”
