Omeruo: Serbia Loss Exposed Super Eagles Lapses

Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo says the loss to Serbia in Tuesday’s international friendly has exposed the areas where the team needs to work on ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Omeruo only saw 35 minutes of action in the Super Eagles 1-0 win over Poland in Wroclaw and was an unused substitute in their 2-0 defeat defeat by Serbia at the Hive stadium.
“It has exposed where we need to improve on. It was not a bad game entirely,”Omeruo told CSN.
“I believe we will be better before the World Cup in Russia.”
Omeruo who has made 35 international appearances for the Super Eagles is expected to feature for Kasimpasa when they face Goztepe on Sunday in a Turkish Super Lig clash.
“The international break is over and I’m looking forward to the next one in May but now I return back to help my team win on Sunday.”
The 23 year old has made 22 league apprearances.

From what we saw on TV, the glaring area that the Super Eagles need to work on is holding on to the ball and building an attack. Why were we on the defensive all the time and in the resulting panic, kicking the ball aimlessly away and starving the attackers of ball supply?

You said all man. Only ebuehi and awaziem were comfortable trying to build from the back. The biggest culprits were ekong, idowu and uzoho. In modern football building from the back is of the basics taught in various academies. Many criticized awaziem after the lost but from my observation he is a classy centre back who will develop into one of the best centre backs out from africa. Ebuehi seemed assured and confident when on possession and joined the attack ease. He wasnt fully fit but i was impressed with his display and rate him ahead of shehu who though isnt a natural rightback. As for idowu i will prefer aina starting ahead of him. He isnt good on the ball, misplaced so many passes and wasnt confident moving forward to help when the team is attacking. Also ahmed musa’s days in the national team are numbered if he doesnt raise his game. For a while he have been awful and his low football IQ s becoming evident. He barely beats his markers, bring in a decent cross nor create something meaningful for the team. I urge GR to bring in a fit onyekuru or bazee to take his slot in the team. In the absence of the teams skipper the only player who has the skill set to play as the teams playmaker is iwobi. If guided by the duo of ndidi and joel or onazi he will have so much freedom to create openings for the strikers. The team is work in progress so this lost against the serbs will serve as an eye opener for the team to work on its lapses

Good observations you have made. Ighalo did very well and really caused problems for the opposition. Who can act as a back up to Ighalo? We will equally need a natural “9”.Ahmed Musa cannot do it.
We have not seen what Junior Ajayi can do cause of his short time on the pitch.

Well i will recommend malaga’s brown ideye atleast for the world cup then post worldcup i will love to see sadiq umar to be integrated into the team as an understudy to ighalo and iheanacho. Another good mention is liverpool on loan striker taiwo awoniyi.

          • Kendo 8 months ago

Charles, I don’t think that Brown Ideye is a natural “9”. If you look at the past he has always played as a support striker to Emenike etc.
I think the best player that would have been ideal is Fanendo Adi that plays in US.
In fact the former US coach Jurgen Klinsmann recommended him to Rohr that he should consider him for the world cup because of his tremendous abilities.
Adi is a goal poacher and has this physical bullish body frame that will trouble most defenders.
The issue is that he just coming out from a long injury lay off. If he becomes physical fit and comes back to his goal scoring ways in time then he should be considered.

  • To me the problems i observed during those friendlies are not more than two,the first is the mid field they lack cohesion,it make the striker starve and the defenders suffer, the second is lack of self confidence of some players,it make them miss pass making the team to lack the ball, conclusively i want to thank the players for their dadication and tryers, wish the gud luck ahead of the global fieata

@ako amadi, you are spot on. The only addition to your short but loaded comment is that we need a point man in the final third. There was none in the last two games.

    • charles emeka okwu 8 months ago

A point man will only deliver when chances are been created for him to score. Ighalo did a decent job when he came in and gave the serbs alot of problems with his physicality. Sentiment apart he is the best for that position for now.

The couching touch was completely absent. Most of them played that game as if they were afraid or ashamed of playing for Nigeria. In other words, Croatia would probably destroy this Team in Russia if they fail to learn from these mistakes. Enough said.

The communication in the back line btwn Ekong and Awaziem was not that solid…. I think Efe ambrose would have replaced Balogun better
    #God bless Nigeria

    • @ Jensen josh God bless you for that observations.Efe ambrose is what the Eagles need as back up to balogun

  • chiezugo 8 months ago

efe ambrose is the man in the absent of balogun

    • charles emeka okwu 8 months ago

Efe ambrose? You guys must be joking. Well i so must believe in rohr who is shrewd and doesnt attach sentiment to his duties and responsibilities. Efe have served his time but its time to give the younger players a chance. If efe is still good why was kicked out from celtic and even had to drop to the scottish 2nd tier of all leagues in europe to play after leaving celtic? Is efe amongs the best centre backs in scotland? For people glamouring for his recall when last did you guys watch him play in the colours of hibernians? Nonsense!

  • charles emeka okwu 8 months ago

After the world cup rohr should give ipswich dominic iorfa jnr an invite, atleast he is young and versatile ie natuarally a a centre back but can be deployed as a rightback. Also hoffeinheim’s and wolfsburg’s defenders akpoguma and uduokhai should be reapproached. These kids if capped and integrated into the team will form the fulcrum of the teams defence for many years. We should be thinking about the future not just getting immediate and temporary stop gaps.

@Charles Efe is still playing in Scottish top flight for another strong side Hibernian.. He has scored couple of times this season…
Am not saying younger ones should not be given the opportunity to showcase their talents and prove their worth, but my dear brother we cant correct our mistakes in the world cup… Let’s us parade the best legs for the mundial

    • charles emeka okwu 8 months ago

Hibernians strong side? Lmao my brother if you are in a lowly rated league as the scottish league and you aint playing for pereniel champions celtic, rangers or at worst aberdeen then you are far better playing in an english league 2 club side.

  • charles emeka okwu 8 months ago

@kendo and who told rohr havent invited adi and monitored from close quarters? He was invited against tanzania and not making the match day squad was testament to his lack of quality. Rohr holds no grudges against adi so i see no reason for him to snub him i he had the qualities the gaffer wants or better than those on ground. Lets call a spade a spade, if adi is so good as some of you proclaim then he should return to europe and prove himself because he is too young to be in the mls. I watched adi when he was with copenhagen in denmark in a ucl match but he didnt appeal to me as a player with tremendous talent to make it to the national team. No disrespect but the little i know of his game he is more of an old fashioned striker who rely so much of supplies to score.

  • charles emeka okwu 8 months ago

@kendo ideye is a workhorse whose unselfish playing style benefits his striking partners. Aside ighalo and iheanacho he seem the ideal backup to the mundial. He is a type of player who can be introduced in a game when the team is fighting for a goal whereas he will serve as a foil to the top 10. No matter how bad ideye is currently he is miles ahead of adi. I will even prefer a young sadiq umar to adi, atleast to be in the team to worldcup will be a good exposure and experience which will prepare him for the future.

If nwakali in Arsenal can try that attacking midfield and call on Martin if he can deoiver. What we need now is give what we want cos we have limited time. The young ones can develop fore feature .
