ONE YEAR ON: Kpakor Pays Tribute To ‘Special Genius’ Amodu

By James Agberebi:

Former Nigeria international Moses Kpakor has described the late Amodu Shuaibu as one of Nigerian coaching geniuses, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Amodu died exactly one year ago on June 10, 2016 in Benin City, Edo State, three days after the death of former Super Eagles captain and coach, Stephen Keshi.

During his time as coach of Super Eagles, Amodu qualified the team for the Korea/Japan 2002 and the South Africa 2010 World Cups.

He was also in charge of the Super Eagles to the Mali 2002 and Angola 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, finishing third in both tournaments.

Commenting on the one year remembrance of Shuaibu, Kpakor who was in the BCC Lions team that won the now defunct African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1990 under Amodu, revealed what made the late coach stand out.

“I spoke about Amodu yesterday in the night. Since he died, his memory keeps coming to me everyday,” Kpakor told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“I frequently dream about Amodu, at least twice a week. So it’s unfortunate and we can’t fight death. I find it difficult to believe that man died.

“Amodu was a genius. I worked with very many good coaches; Amodu was just a special one. What helped Amodu as a coach was that he worked under Alabi Essien as an assistant before he came to BCC. And Alabi was a very good coach in those years. And while at BCC, he worked with James Peters for two years before succeeding him.

“James Peters was the best coach in Nigeria back then, strategically and otherwise. And having studied under Alabi Essien and James Peters, he got those best abilities from the two coaches and merged them together which made him a better coach.

“So I was never surprised and still never surprised that Amodu was so successful in football coaching.”

Kpakor who was in the Super Eagles squad that won silver at the Algiers 1990 Africa Cup of Nations added: “The greatest asset of Amodu was that he was more of a democratic coach. Amodu doesn’t mind to call his players and seek their advice on what system to play. He allows his players to make contributions on how to approach a game, team tactics and team selection.

“And another outstanding quality of Amodu was that he never feared to experiment with tactics and line-ups in the most crucial match. Having worked with him for about six years, there are what made him special.”
