Onigbinde: I Was Accused Of Match Fixing In 2002

Eagles/England tie at Korea/Japan 2002 Mundial

Former FIFA Technical Instructor, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde has sensationally revealed he was accused of fixing Nigeria’s last group game against England when he was Super Eagles coach at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan.

“In our last group match against England at Korea/Japan 2002 World Cup, I decided to put Vincent Enyeama in goal for the first time”, begins Onigbinde.

“People said I’ve sold the match to England, otherwise why should I pick Enyeama?

“Colonel Dominic Oneya (rtd), then NFF Chairman called me saying he had been receiving phone calls from Nigeria and everywhere saying I’ve sold the match by deciding to pick Enyeama and I told him to switch off his phone.

“Today, Vincent has become one of the top goalkeepers in the World. Has my decision then not been proved right? Have I not been vindicated today?”

Onigbinde stated that though Nigeria may have wriggled out of FIFA sanction, it would have perhaps been better if FIFA had banned us so that we can use the opportunity to right all the wrongs in all facets of our football, administratively and technically.

“Can we re-organize our football, administratively and technically?. If not, our football will continue to decline.

“If we go by FIFA standard, there won’t be more than two or three clubs in Nigeria.

“All the rest are owned and run by government. The clubs should be run by their own elected body in line with FIFA Statutes.
