Onigbinde, Sodje Thumb Up Eagles On Congo Defeat

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde and former Eagles defender, Sam Sodje, on Saturday heaped plaudits on Stephen Keshi’s team as they defeated Congo 2-0 to brighten their chances of making it to the 2015 African Cup of Nations.

Returning Eagles striker Ikechukwu Uche and China-based Aaron Samuel scored Nigeria’s goals in the second half of the tensed game which gave Nigeria the edge over the Red Devils on the head-to-head rule.

Congo had defeated Nigeria 3-2 at the UJ Eusene Stadium on September 6 to put Nigeria’s chances of making it to the AFCON on the ropes.

Onigbinde who was in charge of the Eagles during the 1984 African Cup of Nations in Cote d’ Ivoire and took the then known Green Eagles to the final of the tournament spoke tersely to Completesportsnigeria.com on the victory of the Eagles.

“I want to congratulate the Super Eagles on the victory over Congo and hopefully, they will finish the business on Wednesday. All I can say now is congratulations to Nigeria.

“The team had a sense of purpose and gave a good account of themselves. However they have to win against South Africa for the qualification to the Nations Cup to be certain,” Onigbinde stressed.

Sam Sodje on his part said: “The result was a great one. I didn’t see the full game, but I am proud of the team.

“I must warn that the players should not take South Africa for granted on Wednesday. I was impressed by the attacking strength of the Eagles against Congo but the team must work on defending better.

“The defending of set pieces is one area we must work on. The Eagles do not defend set pieces as much as you would like, but thank God for the performance of Vincent Enyeama against Congo.

“South Africa may have qualified with the win over Sudan, but they will still want to get a good result against Nigeria. Let’s hope for a good game and victory over them on Wednesday,” the one-time Charlton Athletic defender, who is currently a free agent tells Completesportsnigeria.com.

A victory for Nigeria on Wednesday will guarantee the Eagles a place in next year’s AFCON in Equatorial Guinea.
