  • Onyerkuru, I wish you all the best in your football endeavours.

Regarding the Super Eagles and the World Cup:

I guess there is some wisdom in allowing players who hitherto have ‘under-performed’ to retain their places in the World Cup opening match.

I will have no problem in seeing the likes Ighalo or Joel Obi in the starting line-up against Croatia because these players may well respond differently, positively and constructively in a tournament scenario.

With Onazi, they need to help him work on his football psyche and physical sharpness and he will be rejuvenated.

These players may prove to be entirely different propositions to the players we saw in friendlies because now the ‘chips are down’ and the football mind-set for the task at hand is different.

Also, perhaps more crucially, one would expect a coach of Gernot Rohr expertise to by now have built enough resilience, balance and resourcefulness to any 11 players he selects for any match.

This is vital because a team with the right resilience and balance should be able to absorb poor performance of 1 player for at least 50 minutes when the poor performer would have been identified and rightly subbed before his performance leads to chaos or disaster.

This Super Eagles team needs to show grit, determination and have to be resolute at all times with the enough balance and resilience to switch formations seamlessly in-match, and to respond to changing circumstance within itself or in their oppositions’ approaches at all times.
