Onyekuru Replaces Injured Ighalo In Super Eagles Squad For Bafana Clash

Onyekuru Replaces Injured Ighalo In Super Eagles Squad For Bafana Clash

By Adeboye Amosu

Henry Onyekuru has been handed a late call-up as replacement for the injured Odion Ighalo for Nigeria’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa, reports Completesportsnigeria. com.
The encounter is billed for the FNB Stadium, Johannesburg next week Saturday.

The three-time African champions will also face the Cranes of Uganda in a friendly encounter at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba on November 20.

Ighalo sustained a harmstring injury in his club Changchun Yatai’s Chinese Super League clash against Tianjin Quanjin on Wednesday.

He was replaced in the 17th minute of the encounter by Lasse Vibe and will now be sidelined for up to five weeks.
Ighalo will also missed Changchun Yatai’s last league match of the season against Dalian Yifang, a big loss to the club who are fighting to escape the drop.

The former Watford striker has scored six goals in his last three apperances for Nigeria and has contributed 21 goals for Changchun Yatai in the CSL this season.

“@henryconyekuru replaces injured @ighalojude for game against South Africa. #SoarSuperEagles #Team9jaStrong #Afcon2019Q,” reads a tweet on the official Twitter handle of the Nigeria Football Federation.

Onyekuru only returned to action last weekend for his Turkish club, Galatasaray after picking up an injury in Nigeria’s last qualifying fixture against Libya in Sfax, Tunisia.

He was in action in Galatasaray’s 2-0 loss to German club, Schalke 04 in a UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday.

Nigeria top Group E with nine points, one more than Bafana Bafana who sit in second position with eight points. Libya occupy third position with four points, while Seychelles have one point.

I’m not a critic of brilliant players e.g Musa Mohammed iheanacho iwobi and Musa even when they loss form I rather remain silent as a form understanding life trend but players like Akpeyi Agbim Egkwueke Agu Yakubu and Ighalo regardless of how far you shine with fishermen teams I will highlight you match after match. Below I will give you highlights of people who are green snakes in this forum and how they change their mouths once you hit 2goals against fishermen teams! And honor to those who deserve for their true view of sportsmanship instead of political propaganda!

Chima, in a platform that permits and promotes anonymous contributions, you come here with what appears to be your real identity, yet you make statements that aren’t legally safe!
What if 22 is Iheanacho’s real age and he chooses to sue to for defamation of character! You will say it wasn’t only you that he should also sue Bartorx!
What you don’t know is that Bartorx is not as stupid as he makes out. He is nonetheless stupid.
Even if you have reservations about Iheanacho’s age, posting your doubts on his birthday reveals very poor judgement on your part.
You claim to be wealthy and wise but your words reveal that you are poor where it matters most (intellect).
If you continue this way, all your wealth will be used paying legal bills after someone else chooses to teach you a lesson.
A word is enough for the wise (or the stupid whichever the case may be).

True. Success is not a good sub for Ighalo now or in the future. How many goals has he scored for his Club in the past 2 years. It is premature to even extend an invitation to Success at this time. It is a big deal that our Ighalo will not be in South Africa. Ho Lord. protect our Musa, Iwobi and now Henry Onyekuru from all injuries before this must- win match. Amen.

The coach was the ultimate killer of this match. Pls of what value is a striker who has not scored or assisted a single goal in ur last 10 matches. We all saw Simy against Congo, just as we’ve been seeing him in the serie A. Even if he was to bring on a striker on in the 46th minute it shouldnt have been ighalo. We needed someone who could hold up play effectively upfront for us and we had a 2m tall simy who is built for that. Argentina coach brought on 3 attacking players to stretch our defence….wah was our coache’s response to that……Nothing. 3 tiring defenders against 3 attacking argentines + Lionel Messi. I would have expected a switch to a 4-5-1 or a 4-4-2 so that we can have 2 lines of defense and wide players who can drop back to provide support for the full backs. The less said of Ighalo the better. I can bet there is some kind of unholy alliance going on btw him and the coach.
I really feel for the boys. they gave their all. If only they had started giving their all from the very 1st match. Its just a reflection of how we like to do thing in nigeria….we leave things till wen its too late to redeem”

Now tell me one Nigerian that didnt critisize ighalo after the argentina game.
That is where i am head and shoulders above you…..I know that to err is human.
When the young man found his form back, for both club and country, I gave him due acknowledgement and praised him for his efforts and I still stand by those words of praise. But you…what did you do…you went ahead and rubbished him and his goals…you claimed he was playing against weak defenders…you claimed he was scoring tappings and all other sorts of rubbish. Till today, you have refused to give him credit for scoring a hatrick, a feat not many nigerians legends can boast of and then following it with a brace 3 days later. You even went as far as saying ighalo and uzoho “intentionally” got themselves ruled out of the match against SA (Ive never read any comment as foolish as that on CSN forum)
        .
Yet your Isaac success scores one tap in 2 years of football and you come here to praise him to the highest heavens. So is it your isaac success that will not flop in major tournaments (your issac success that hasnt scored 10 league goals altogheter since debuting in top flight football close to 4 years now..?). You are such a double mouthed human being.
You who came here to call all our players mediocre, even insulted iheanacho wen he scored in the carling cup (abi na capital one cup sef) as a capital one cup scorer.
Look at him talking about thinking beyond caf thing as if we will go and manufacture or clone superstar players in the mould of CR7, Neymar, Sergio Ramos et al. Pls go and pack your children who are playing in all the top club in the world and bring them to the national team ehn….so that at least you can lead the course of “thinking beyond CAF”

    • Chima E Samuels 1 week ago

History will never be deleted take it or leave it whenever we face big teams all these flopsters will surely flop that is why I keep saying that yes we can qualify for major tournaments but can we win them? We have to start thinking beyond this CAF thing and see how to be a world beater so as not to keep failing when it matters.

  • Bomboy 1 week ago

I don’t like this at all!

I am sorry for being so pessimistic, but this is giving me a bad feeling.

Ndidi, Uzoho, Ighalo and maybe Collins, four players that would have been in the starting line up, will not be available for the South Africa game.

Is this a coincidence, or is it ‘fate’ playing mind games with us to test our resolve?

The last time we played them, some of our key players were not available. And this time around, we are experiencing the same thing!

    Na wa o!

    • Bomboy, I share in your sense of anxiety. I pray it is not the case but I am praying not to read the headline below on complete sports Nigeria the day after the match: ‘ROHR BLAMES INJURIES TO KEY PLAYERS AS THE REASON FOR THE SHOCK AWAY LOSS TO SOUTH AFRICA’.
      ~
That scenario seems highly unlikely though so I seriously think we have nothing to worry about.

Dr Drey please, let bygone be bygone. Stop this feud with Chima please.
You do come across as an intelligent person.
The main problem I have with you is when you go around responding to posts from people who haven’t offended you in any way shape or form.
It is really bad and you need to repent.
I know you have have a foul mouth but please don’t be angry with me.
I still remember when Luomo made a harmless contribution only to be showered with insult the way you showered me with insult all those many months ago, and my offence? Because you did not like what I wrote about Uzoho. Then I got angry and tried to get back at you but I am not your match, nobody is. You are that good.
The only thing that can compete against your brilliant Football knowledge and analysis is your abilities to insult others
Poor Luomo had to be encouraged after you pounced on him like a hungry lion. Please stop, please. Please forgive me and all other people whose views you disagree.
See the link that you upset poor Luomo.https://www.completesportsnigeria.com/etebo-optimistic-stoke-city-will-bounce-back-from-winless-streak/#comments

      • God bless you bro..not like I can’t or won’t respond but I wasn’t trained that way..we are all fans and human beings who have blood flowing in our veins as well..no one here will say he hasn’t praised a player who he later came to commend or vice versa..that is purely the nature of we human beings..what I detest is wanting or waiting to unleash venoms on a contributor when a player he condemns or praises does come out to vindicate himself through performances…i believe that is all we are craving for…criticisms is one one of those that will make a player better and we can’t shy away from that

    • Ashy Slashy 1 week ago

Dr Drey, your response to poor Ugo below in the link below was also uncalled for.
Please Drey, repent. Although there were strictly speaking no insult in your reply to Luomo (in a previous example that I cited), your response still caused the poor chap some distress.
Please, biko, come here to share your brilliant knowledge with others and when you disagree, nobody will shoot you for not unleashing distress pill to others
Please stop. You need to bring an end to online bullying and harassment. You are hurting people.
E seun. (Please, show mercy in your reply sir)

The eagles and bafana match is an important and deciding match in somehow determining to an extent who tops the group. No doubt Nigeria is missing some key players especially in the midfield. This was the same problem Nigeria had in 2017 when we lost to South Africa. We started nice but later fell like a pack of cards. I believe that this is the best match with which to really test coach rohr’s technical know how in using the players available to win a match in an opponent’s home. I pray we remain consistent in playing well for 90 mins and with good focus, we will have luck on our side. This is the best time for those tagged ‘fringe players’to showcase what they can do.

  • I see our darling super eagles winning the match and picking the max 3 points. We have players who I believe are also equal to the task to replace the Injured ones. Success should grap his chance with both hands this time. Up eagles.

Criticizing our players or coaches are part of our fundamental right, dissenting  opinions is always good for sports, nobody hates our players, we criticize them at times because some of them can be lazy or complacent, nobody wants our players to fail, some fans are more emotional u guys must understand that. We all patriots that’s why we are on this forum commenting , sharing ideas everyday. The green white geeen belongs to  us all. We are not in Arab countries the last time I checked. Bafana must fall.

      • Ayphillydegreat 1 week ago

You want to investigate me??? I give you all the permission bestowed upon me to go ahead and investigate to the skin of your teeth. Then come back here to tell me when I cried whenever we lose to a decent opposition. In fact you’re already referring to yourself because you’re the one who as been calling the gaffer and the players all sorts of names since we lost to Croatia and Argentina at the WorldCup. Two teams that are way above our young SuperEagles at the worldCup in all ramifications, which I vividly highlighted in all my pre and post WorldCup posts. All of a sudden they’re now brilliant players after 3 wins on the spin against teams you call fishermen team. I’ve never seen anyone this confused. @SunnyB I hear you. After all you’re now supporting the team after 3 convincing wins. I appreciate your courage to finally accept that we have a team for the future that hopefully can reach their potentials.

        • Dr. Drey 1 week ago

AyPhilly…are you minding that confused kid…??? Hatred can be maddening at times. Or how else dyu wanna quantify insulting a player for playing badly previously and then insulting him again for playing superbly afterwards….rather than humbly and quietly eating your humble pie and acknowledging the player for doing is job well…even if it is just for that one time. Even the african adage says wen you scold a child with ur right hand, you use your left to draw him closer. Suddenly, the same libya that “somepeople” were saying will beat the SE and G.Rohr be replaced with Adel Amoruche have now turned back to say the libyan team is quack after a superb home and away performance by G.Rohr and the SE (including their much hater players – Uzoho & Ighalo). Suddenly, SA is now their next “world class” team who are no macth for the SE….the same SA team couldnt beat the “fishermen” we trashed in their home. Suddenly, our 1st choice SE players are “intentionally” getting themselves injured so that they wont get tested against Bafana Bafana, same players that faced the likes of Argentina, Poland, England, Croatia, Iceland b4 and during the world cup……LOLz.
Hatred can really make people loose their senses…!!!

  • I hope our gaffer will be brave enough to drop Musa but highly unlikely. If we can play Samuel kalu (who by way has caught the eyes of top European clubs) on the right wing however the new invitee Samuel Chukwueze (have watched his clips on YouTube and the boy is an exciting prodigy) on the left, Success as the CF and Iwobi as a play maker, our attack force will be a nightmare for the South African defense. Good news Colins has shake up his injury scare he was outstanding against Libya.

I really don’t rate Shehu highly as a RB but after his injury and Aina took his place I could see what he brings to the team. My concern now is the middle of the pack with the absence of Ndidi, will he play Agu or the young boy called in to replace Ndidi?
My preference will be Agu alongside Otebo

Give this boys a chance they won’t disappoint. Musa was at the top of his game going into world cup thanks to his former club who took him in and the pressure by the coach to keep improving which was evident as that WC, but since the WC his average play has nosrdived a little, even though he scored against Seychelles but his overall play i think has deteriorated somehow, his is no longer what he used to be. Maybe its down to the league he plied his trade, I can’t say.

Please give these two Samuels a chance on both planks let’s see. Mr coach I hope you can spare few mins to read this comments by the fans. Cheers!

    • BigD 1 week ago

@Abu. Bench Musa? Seriously? In the last 3 matches (against Seychelles and Libya) he has two goals (one against Seychelles and one against Libya) and two  Assists. That means he has contributed to half of the goals scored in the 3 matches since the World Cup. Add the two at the World Cup against Argentina then he has contributed to 6 goals in our last 4 matches
He is the top performer currently in the attacking players currently available and my first choice for left wing. Yes, he has developed a chemistry with Ighalo and Ofion is not a available for the next match, but if he can replicate that with Success or any other centre forward chosen then we are guaranteed goals.

I would place Chukwueze on the right wing and an alternative position would be as attacking centre midfield if Iwobi needs replacing. Onyekuru Would be my second choice Right wing with Chukwueze moving towards the centre of the park in a tactical change, that could also see Iwobi moving to left wing (his normal position at Arsenal).

Another fall back, third choice would be Kalu instead Onyekuru as his play is more “selfish” and henry holds the ball up intelligently passing the ball to a player who is better placed for a shot instead of Kalu trying to dribble his way through. I’ll say Henry has blended with the team better than Kalu so far and we will need cohesive play in order to get through the SA defence.

    • BigD 1 week ago

      Watch second match against Libya.

Ewooo…?! Start 3 strikers who have never played even monkey post together before, against our bitter rivals in a competitive qualifier….and keep the man who has been directly involved in half the goals we’ve scored since world cup on the bench…????
Biko….let me come and be going…..!

@Abu, you have a good point but you know in football experience counts a lot and we really needed Musa experience in that team. Since Mikel is not available, Musa is the main man in charge of the team now. Musa has been in a great form since world cup in Russia.

Unlike the first leg against South Africa, we were exposed due to the fact that most of our experienced players were injured.

Eagles are more experienced now. I will love to see that Chukwueze in the second half of the game and also, this is an opportunity for Osemeh. If given a chance, I’m pretty sure that he won’t disappoint the coach.

Thank God we have everything in place for the match. The only concern I’m having now is coach Rohr.

If he get his tactics right on that day with the abundant talents we have in that team, Nigeria should be able to win the match 4 to 5 zero.

Lastly, the coach should change two players on Saturday 17th. Akpeyi and Omeruo. They should not be on the pitch on that day.

I have a reason for saying that. I read what the South Africans are saying and they were praying for the two players to be on the field comes on Saturday 17th.

We needed two things on that day. 3 points is at stake and Super Eagles need to show them we are not in the same level. They stopped Nigeria from going to Afcon and this is the best time for Nigeria to pay them back.

For me, South Africa already out of the race. Nigeria and Libya will qualify if Gernot Rohr get his tactics right. No late subs and he should please put the right players at right positions. By God’s grace, Victory is ours. Happy weekend my people. God bless us all. God bless Nigeria!!!

@Omonaija. Omeruo seriously?? The man is on form and helped his team Leganese achieve a highly unexpected draw with Athletico Madrid shutting out Griezeman who was only able to score from a free kick.
He posted very good ratings in that match and I would prefer him to partner Troost than Balogun who has been on the bench with his club since September.
Sorry but Omeruo edges him in my book.

Interesting analysis here from great football pundit.

I love everyone contribution, as I read down the comments.

My take here is for the coach to pay close attention to the players, he should not be carried away even when the players are doing well against South Africa.

He should make changes on time to burst the team ability to hold on.

I have notice the coach hardly make changes on time. Especially when it matters most.

Wish the SE all the best, the should pick the ticket right there in SA backyard. One nil is not bad, all we want is 3points.
