Divok Origi scored a last-gasp winner for Liverpool who recorded a hard-fought 1-0 win at home to Everton in the 232nd Merseyside derby on Sunday.
Origi who last scored a goal in the English Premier League in May 2017 headed in the winner in the 96th minute of the nervy encounter after Jordan Pickford has misjudged a miss-kick from Virgil van Dijk.
The win extends Liverpool’s unbeaten run against Everton to 18 league games.
Everton had a glorious chance through Andre Gomes in the first half to take the lead, but Alisson Becker superbly denied the header from close range.
Saido Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah all missed chances for Liverpool as the game looked destined for a draw before the substitute, Origi, popped up with the winner in the final seconds of the
game after Pickford failed to deal with Van Dijk’s audacious effort. It was Origi’s third goal against Everton – his best record against any side for Liverpool.
The win sees Liverpool consolidates on their second place, two points behind defending champions Manchester City.
Liverpool travel to Burnley in their next game looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
Everton, meanwhile, who are without a victory in their last 18 meetings with Liverpool, and are winless at Anfield this century host Newcastle at Goodison Park as they hope to bounce back from the defeat suffered at Anfield.
They remain in sixth position in the table, eight points below Tottenham in fifth and Arsenal in fourth.
