Nigerian table tennis star Funke Oshonaike has stated that coaches and administrators should be blamed for Nigeria’s abysmal performance at the just concluded 2017 ITTF Challenge Seamaster Nigeria Open in Lagos, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
No Nigerian table tennis player qualified for the finals in any of the categories.
Oshonaike revealed that she will quit the scene until another talent is unearthed to replace her.
“I don’t think I can stop until we have players better than Funke, Aruna and Toriola ready to come up,”Oshonaike told Lagos-based radio station Brila FM in an interview.
“We have a lot of talents in Nigeria, but the major problems have been good coaching and a better administration.”
She also explained why she lost in the women’s singles event at the just concluded.
The 41-year-old lost out to 4-1 (5-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-5, 17-15) to Piccolin Giorgia in the quarter-finals of the event.
“I was dealing with the trauma in the event and personal issues on the day I lost in the singles,” she added.
“It’s worrisome when Nigeria hosts an ITTF event and our players had to provide accommodation for themselves.”
