Nicolas Otamendi signed a new deal during the summer but is poised to discuss his Manchester City future with Pep Guardiola. The Argentina central defender was a stand-out performer last season during the Citizens’ record-breaking Premier League title success which also earned him a place in the PFA Team of the Year.
City subsequently rewarded him with an improved two-year extension but he has been pushed out of the starting picture this term by the impressive solid pairing of John Stones and Aymeric Laporte.
Otamendi has made just three Premier League appearances this campaign and is also finding starts hard to come by in the Champions League, adding to concerns Guardiola is now settled on his favoured partnership at the heart of his rearguard.
The 30-year-old is said to be happy at the Etihad and is believed to be only looking for further reassurances at this stage. City boss Guardiola has previously asked for patience from the no-nonsense defender and it is likely he will be utilised more during the busy festive programme.
Otamendi was signed from Valencia for £30m in 2014 and continues to have his admirers in La Liga who could be tempted to test the water next year if his starting opportunities continue to be limited in Manchester.
