Owners Eye More F1 Dates In US

Formula 1 boss Chase Carey says the powers that be are still keen to add a second F1 race in the United States to the calendar. Stateside firm Liberty Media, who took ownership of F1 in January 2017, have been working hard to include another US race since taking control and had been focusing their efforts on a possible Grand Prix around the streets of Miami.

However, those plans have indefinitely been put on hold after local authorities baulked at the revised suggestion of a new track in the city and the only new addition to the 2019 schedule will be a race in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi.

With a race in Miami now looking unlikely, Liberty are examining other options with a long-term plan to have one race on the east coast and one on in the west in the future, in addition to the United States Grand Prix in Austin that’s currently on the calendar.

Carey told Speed Week: “The plan is to have a second race in the US. But we are not just dealing with Miami, even if we are convinced that it would be a great project.

“The negotiations are going on. When it comes to street circuits there are many interests that need to come together and it takes time. “The fan festival [held before the Austin GP] helped, everyone thought the event was great. It was a positive step towards the race.”
