Nigerian basketball men’s team captain, Olumide Oyedeji, has told completesportsnigeria.com that the newly appointed D’Tigers coach William B. Voigt will be given all the support he needs to succeed at the FIBA-Africa Basketball Championship in Tunisia.
The former Head Coach/General Manager of the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Development League, whose appointment was confirmed by the Nigeria Basketball Federation few days back, will also have to ensure that Nigeria excel in the tournament.
Speaking to completesportsnigeria.com on Wednesday, Oyedeji, a former NBA player with Dallas Maverricks, said he has confidence in the coach and also expects him to lead the team to a glorious outing at the tournament.
“Well, he is not new in this basketball business and for the NBBF to have confirmed him, it means they have done their home work and are sure that he will not disappoint the nation. I am just a player in the team and what I think he needs to succeed is the support of every one of us,” says the England-based Nigeria international.
Coach Voigt was offered a short-term contract until September to win the Afrobasket and qualify Nigeria for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. If he succeeds, he will be the coach to lead the team to the Olympics. He is to be assisted by a team of assistant coaches and a video analyst. Coaches Ayinla Johnson and Abdulrahaman Mohammed as well as the team doctor and physiotherapist will keep their positions from the 2013 coaching staff.
