Super Eagles Italian goalkeeping coach, Italian Enrico Pionetti has said that he was not convinced that the local boys were good enough to face Cameroon, hence his request for the invitation of two foreign based goalkeepers, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Enrico, told Completesportsnigeria.com in Kano shortly after the domestic Eagles booked their ticket to play CHAN cup early next year that he needed to see the other goalkeepers before he and Aloy Agu made their recommendations to Gernot Rohr for the world Cup qualifiers against Cameroon
“Against Cameroon, Nigeria need the best, and we are not completely satisfied with with the goalkeepers that we have worked with for about one month,” Pionetti said in his smattering English, gesticulation.
“We need to see and work with the other two goalkeepers before we pick the person who will be in goal against Cameroon. Your goalkeepers good but not ready.”
However, Aloy Agu said that the invitation of Akpeyi and Alampasu was not a vote of no confidence on the home based goalkeepers, but the need to give everyone equal opportunity to fight for places in the Super Eagles
“We are not saying that the foreign based goalkeepers are better, no, what we want is to make things competitive among our best. If Ezenwa proves his mettle, he might be goal ahead of Akpeyi and Alampasu. All we want is to see their readiness and fitness to be the best
“Like you have always said, the Super Eagled don’t have problem with the goalkeeping department because our first choice, Carl Ikeme is indisposed. We have more than four good goalkeepers to replace him in the game against Cameroon” the former Eagles goalkeeper reiterated.
Agu assured that the Super Eagles will go into the Cameroon game without fear in the area of goalkeeping, adding that whoever gets the nod to be in goal will do very well to help beat Cameroon.
