Plateau United, MFM, Akwa United Begin Continental Title Quest

By Adeboye Amosu: Nigerian clubs Plateau United, MFM FC  and Akwa United will begin their quest for a successful campaign on the continent this weekend, Completesportsnigeria. com reports.

Plateau United, who won their first Nigeria Professional Football League title last season, will begin their CAF Champions League campaign with a home game against Eding Sport of Cameroon at the New Jos Stadium on Sunday.
Kennedy Boboye’s men though lacking I  experience on the continent have recruited well, adding quality players like Okiemute Odah, Tosin Omoyele, Raphael Ayagwa, Terna Suswan and King Osanga to their squad.
The Tin City club  have made a good start in the NPFL and are second in the table, one point behind leaders Akwa United.
They head into the game in boisterous mood after thrashing highly fancied  Sunshine Stars 5-0 at home last weekend.
The country’s other representatives in the competition, MFM FC of Lagos, will be up against Malian club AS Real de Bamako at the  Complex Sportif Hérémakono Stadium also on Sunday.

The Olukoya Boys surprised many by coming second in the NPFL table last term  in what was their second season in the top flight.

They will hope for a repeat of that as they bid to make positive impact in the competition.

No Nigerian club has won the CAR Champions League since Enyimba conquered the continent in 2004.

In the CAF Confederation Cup, Akwa United have another chance to better their performance of two years ago  as they look to become the first Nigerian team to win the competition.

They will host Banjul Hawks of Gambia at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Sunday.

The Promise Keepers lost out in the preliminary round in 2016, going down to a 6-5 penalty shootout defeat to Vita Club Mokanda of  Congo following a 1-1 aggregate scoreline.

Nigeria’s other representatives Enyimba were drawn into the next round and will face the winners of Energie of Benin Republic versus Guinea’s Hafia in the first round.
