Jose Mourinho’s winless run at St James Park continued on Sunday with Manchester United who lost 1-0 to Newcastle United in the Premier League.
Matt Ritchie scored the only goal in the 65th minute of the clash after the first half ended goalless.
The defeat means Manchester United, still in second place, are now 16 points adrift of city rivals Manchester City with 11 games left to play. Newcastle United on their part moved to 13th in the English Premier League table following the win.
Newcastle, who had not won at home in four months, began the game very compact, defending well as Jonjo Shelvey and Mohamed Diame dominated Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba who starred for Manchester United in midfield.
United best chance in the first half fell to Anthony Martial who failed to continue his fine run in front of goal, being prevented with a one-on-one superb save from Newcastle debutant in goal Martin Dubravka.
In the second half, Ritchie latched on to a knock down pass from a set piece to beat David De Gea from close range to hand Rafa Benitez another win over his old foe Mourinho.
Mourinho took off Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard for the trio of Juan Mata, Michael Carrick and Scott McTominay in search of an equaliser but they could not help United from suffering their fifth league defeat of the season.
